chapter five: falling, dying, a warning written in fire, to love without caution is to fly too close to the sun.
sunghoon had never felt more alive. his wings beat in a steady rhythm as he soared high above the clouds, the wind rushing past his face. he could see everything from up there; the world laid out before him like a patchwork quilt. but everything else faded away, and all that mattered was getting closer to haeun.
his wings fluttered gently at first, each beat filling him with a sense of euphoria that he had never felt before. the winds lifted him high up into the sky, tossing him around like a playful child. he felt free, like he could fly forever. but he knew that he couldn't. he had to land at some point, and when he did, he would be with haeun once again.
however, as he drew closer to the sun, he became uncomfortably aware of the searing heat of her rays burning his hands and face. the pain seemed unbearable, and he knew he should turn back before it was too late. but he also knew that his love for haeun was too strong. he couldn't turn back now. he mustered all of his courage and pressed on.
getting closer and closer to the sun, he soared until he was mere inches away. despite the intensifying heat, he pushed through it. sunghoon caught a glimpse of haeun's figure, illuminated by the radiant glow of the fiery orb. her warmth and light enveloped him, overwhelming him with a love that consumed every fibre of his being.
but then, something started to go wrong. his wings began to crackle and pop. he looked down and saw the wax and feathers melting away, causing the once sturdy wings to become brittle and weak.
his heart sank as he realised the gravity of his situation. sunghoon knew how foolish he had been, how his love had blinded him to the dangers of getting too close to the sun. consumed by his obsession, he failed to see the truth. even as he desperately tried to steer away from the sun and make his way back to earth, he knew that it was too late.
the wings could no longer support him. sunghoon

from the skies like a shooting star, his body spinning end over end, weightless and powerless. sunghoon crashed onto the unforgiving ground with a horrendous sound. his body crumpled in on itself, and he could feel his life seeping away from him.

for air, sunghoon could not help but think of what could have been if he had heeded the warnings. his love for haeun had caused him to make the same mistake that icarus had made, and he had paid a terrible price for it.
in the end, sunghoon's fate was the same as icarus, but his story was different in that it served as a warning to those who loved too much. it was a cautionary tale of the dangers of allowing love to consume you until it burns you from the sky down to the earth below. sunghoon had learned his lesson the hard way, and as his eyes closed for the final time, he hoped that others would take heed of his story and not follow in his tragic footsteps.
« as sunghoon lay there on the ground, his breaths came shallow and strained, and a sense of calm washed over him. he had accomplished what he had set out to do, reaching for the heavens and touching the sun. in that fleeting moment, he had been closer to haeun than anyone before him.
his heart fluttered weakly as the sky bled crimson, a melancholic beauty that matched the ache in his chest. with a soft exhale, he surrendered to the sanguine sky and closed his eyes. in his final moments, he savoured the bittersweet knowledge that he had fulfilled his most fervent wish — even if it meant his end. »

SO, WHAT HAPPENED?
(if you're confused — literally me like 80% of this story)―while sunghoon is inspired by icarus, haeun is not necessarily a literal representation of the sun.
―this short story is meant to serve as a warning about the dangers of allowing love to consume you completely.
―it is important to note that this is not a retelling of the myth, but rather a unique take on the story that highlights the difference between healthy love and unhealthy attachment.
―sunghoon's wings melted because he let his love for haeun blind him to the risks of getting too close to her, just as icarus was blinded by his ambition to go too high.
―sunghoon's fate is left up to your imagination. (originally, i wanted him dead, but i felt bad.)
