Jealousy

Upon arriving in L.A., Connor goes ahead to deal with business. He plans to meet up with me and Marc outside Knight’s Tower and Casino. While I wait, I smile to myself. Marc sees my smile. For the first time in forever, I’m just happy.

-  What’s up?
-  I just feel at peace. There is something about this coast. Makes every problem seem a million miles away.
-  I like seeing you this way. Coming out here may be our best decision yet.
-  Agreed, wait, our?
- Well, of course, all this wouldn’t have been possible without your voice of reason in your ear.

He gives me a slide smile and nods. Suddenly Connor’s casino manager comes strutting out of the double doors.

- Good morning, you must be Bailey and Marc. I expected you’re getting on, okay?
- Yes, we are, thank you. And you are?
- Glad to hear it. I’m Emma, the casino manager here. I’ve brought some keycards for the resort. They will give you access to the building, but nothing else.

She raises her brow and hands us the cards.

- Thanks, where is Connor?
- He’s upstairs, waiting for you.
- Oh great, I’ll head up then.
- Yes, you best hurry, Connor doesn’t like to wait, for anyone.

She shoots me a glance, turns on her heels, then walks back quickly toward the building.

- Suppose you should follow, such a pleasant woman that one.

Marc widens his eyes and looks at me.

- That’s a nice way of putting it.

I leave Mac and follow Emma into the building, making my way to Connor’s office. Connor is waiting for me outside his office. Emma walks ahead of me toward Connor and strokes her fingers across his shoulder.

-  As promised.
- Hello, Mr. Knight.
- Hello, Bailey, nice to see you again. I trust L.A. has been good to you so far.
-  No complaints.

Expect maybe, Emma. Who does she think she is? I notice Emma only focusing on Connor. She brushes off his suited shoulders, adjusting his collar.

- Mr. Knight, you look like you could use a bit of rest. I can take you to your room if you’d like. There’s a car waiting downstairs.

Okay, something is going on here.

- I think we have some business to take care of, don’t we, Mr. Knight?
-  Yes, I’m fine, Emma. Thank you. Bailey and I do have some business to tend to.

Emma finally acknowledges me. She looks me up and down.

- Another meeting?
- Well, it certainly does sound like it.

I make my way toward Connor. Emma fixes Connor’s tie.

- All work and no play this one is.

The jealousy bursts inside me like a flame in the dark.

- Oh, I don’t think so. I think Mr. Knight plays quite often, and quite hard for that matter.

I give Emma a smirk.

-  Well, all the more reason to rest then, I suppose.

I stand opposite Emma, with Connor in between the two of us. I slide my hands around Connor’s arm, holding it sweetly.

-  I think we’d rather, power through, go hard and fast. What do you think, Connor?
- Absolutely. No rest for the wicked, am I right?

I and Emma laugh, I squeeze his arm as she playfully brushes his shoulder.

- Right, and wicked you are.

I wink at Connor, and Emma glares at me.

- Can I get you anything, Connor? Perhaps a cocktail or..?
-  I’m good, thank you. Bailey, would you like anything?
