"Promise you'll stay?"
"Always."
Beep...
Beep...
Beep...
What...?
Continuous noises pulled me from my sleep.
Beep...
Beep...
Beep...
I suddenly noticed how bright the lights were even with my eyes closed. Raising my hand to lift the covers, I found that my arm was heavier than I remember.
Remember? Wait...
Where am I?
"Ther—" Faint voices caught my attention and I opened my eyes.
Blurry silhouettes filled my vision and I blinked profusely, hoping it would help clear my eyesight.
And it did.
A loud buzz startled me but more confusion settled in when I felt the person in front of me engulf me in a hug.
"Thank Lord heavens, my daughter is back!" her voice sounded way louder than expected and a small wave of headache made me wince in pain.
She pulled back and I sat up before looking around with my eyebrows furrowed.
"Heather," a man with auburn hair and a mustache stepped closer and placed a hand on my arm, and I looked at him waiting for another word.
"Is everything alright?" he said.
I heard a door open and we all looked at the source, two people wearing hospital uniforms rushed toward us and ushered the other two in front of me to step aside.
"Good morning," I was greeted with a warm smile, "I'm your doctor, Rob Brown. How are you feeling?"
"Okay...?" I shook my head lightly, realizing that my mouth was dry as a desert. "Kinda confused."
He just nodded and pulled out a small flashlight, "Follow this."
The light made me squint but I did what he said nonetheless.
"Can you tell me about yourself?" he asked and I swallowed a forming lump in my throat. I... couldn't.
I don't know what to tell him.
A click turned the flashlight off and he put his hands in his white coat, "Mom, can you give her a small glass of water?"
Mom?
I looked at the woman frantically obeying his order and I looked back at the doctor, finding his observing stare uncomfortable. He asked the people around me to step out of the room after I was given the drink.
The glass met my lips and I was surprised at how cold it was, even more surprised how I didn't even realize how much I needed the water.
"Do you know why you're here?"
"No..." I answered, "But you're a doctor so I'm guessing I was sick."
Lines in the corner of his eyes showed when he smiled, "Not particularly sick. You got in an accident, Miss Heather."
