The war between life and affection goes on. Life won this round. This time.
I grieved, but I told myself I had to do it. I wore the necklace everyday as a reminder to not ever let such petty feelings control my life again. I'm going to live forever, and he tried to take it away from me. He can't make me happy, the only thing to be happy about is being alive.
Right?
Clearing my mind was the first thing on my list, so naturally, I call my best friend Drew. Yes, the lonely guy I work with. He's the only person of the opposite sex that I can really talk to. I feel bad for him, though, because it is believed that he hasn't found his mate yet because he neglected to look for love for so long that when one of his incarnated soul mates died, the spirit died with them. This is uncommon, for no one knows how so many incarnations would decease so easily. Unless you're a person like me.
Drew and I decided to take a walk through town, we usually talk about our whereabouts and problems, and I, of course, fail to mention my recent kills. The last thing I need is my best friend calling the Protectors on me.
"So I heard you found the somebody for you," Drew stated.
"What? I don't believe I know what you're talking about," I stammered. How did he know about that?
"I saw what happened the other day," he told me." He came in and just talked to you, he didn't order a thing. Then I saw the glow between you guys, and it was brighter than I've ever seen a soul light be. I knew you guys were meant for each other."
"Yeah, I did too," I softly stated. "It must have been a mistake. I read something about false soul lights." That was unmistakably the lie of the day.
He looked at me in disbelief, but he seemed to shrug off my lame excuse. "I think at this point of my life, I'd take even the softest soul light. False or not."
"Oh come on. It would be impossible for you not to find your mate eventually," I assured him, even though believing it probably wasn't true.
In reaction to my response, he stared into the distance. If I didn't know any better, I would say that he was tearing up. Through all the hardships in his life, he has made a point to never cry. In front of other people, at least.
"I've got secrets," he said with an almost raspy voice." I almost can't live with them, Ayla. I've done so many things, and it's my fault my life has come to this. The worst part is that I can't bring myself to tell anybody."
"Not even me?"
"Especially not you."
