"No."

"But dad-"

"No means no, Jane. With this killer running around the last thing I need is you at a party," Hopper takes a microwaved dinner out of the freezer to heat up for his lunch.

"We won't be out long," Jane leans against the counter with pleading eyes.

I don't know how he resists those eyes.

Hopper slams the microwave shut and looks at Jane, He sighs and looks at me.

"Keep her safe Mayfield, this will be my big trust moment for you."

Janes's eyes light up and she jumps up. "Thank you!" She grabs my hand and drags me to her room. "We have to pick out clothes!" Jane shuts the door behind her and looks at me. "What's the plan?"

Two hours.

Two hours of planning and... distractions.

But our plan is set.

"So blue or red?" Jane holds up two shirts side by side over her torso.

"The purple top behind you."

Jane looks at me and drops the shirts on her desk before picking up the shirt I was referring to.

It's a simple purple- lavender button-up.

I'm a simple person.

Unless it's a detailed plan for murdering people.

"And what pants?"

I sigh and look at the litter of clothes around her before settling on...

Simple, white shorts.

"I'll be changing out of them anyway..." Jane sighs and puts her outfit on the bed and sits next to me.

"You seem out of it," Jane nudges my leg with hers studying my side profile.

I shrugged and swallowed the building guilt in my throat.

Who knew I'd feel guilty about shoving a knife down my brother's throat?

I could care less about the girl, but Billy?

It's an ever-longing guilt that keeps coming back up, making me have to swallow it back down.

"Just tired," I look at Jane and her face tells me she knows I'm fibbing.

You two have been friends since 2nd grade. You sound like you're surprised.

"Do you think you made a mistake?" Janes's eyes are wider than normal and she looks worried.

Why is she worried?

I look at her carefully and nod, prolonging the conversation about the guilt.

It's like her entire world came crashing down all at once, every bad thought she ever thought of came into play and it shattered her heart.

And mine.

"Jane?"

Jane shakes her head and stands up, walking out of her room and out the door.

What the hell happened?

I stand up and walk out after her, speedwalking out the door and on the porch.

"JANE!" She disappeared... she's nowhere to be seen. She couldn't have been kidnapped, she knows how to fight and her dad always makes her have a pocket knife on her, even in the house.
