THE WORLD CAN BE AN EXTREMELY CRUEL PLACE WHEN IT WANTS TO BE, throwing curve balls that even the best of fielders wouldn't be able to catch. For the most part, Charlotte Campbell likes to think of herself as a fairly competent player in the game of life — sixteen successful years of happiness with a lot to show for it. Yet, when she felt as if she'd had her biggest win, Mother Nature had hit its own home run.
Charlotte had been so far away from home when the play was made, on an entirely different continent chasing a dream that would never come to fruition. The girl had kissed her parents on the cheek before boarding the plane, the brightest smile on her face as she waved goodbye, so naive to believe that everything she'd ever hoped for would be reality.
The only thing was that when the world as they knew it came to an untimely end, Charlotte had no use for a large gold trophy or a first place ribbon. No, the teenager could only hold onto the sleek metal bow she'd used to win them. Every arrow became precious, her once precise aim shaky as the arrows pierced the skulls of the walking dead, the brain the bullseye she'd have to hit to be successful from now on.
For her entire life she'd been told to chase her dreams, to persevere and work hard. Now, well now there's nothing left to run down. Charlotte Campbell didn't know how to live without ambition and that makes surviving a hell of a lot harder.
