Chapter 8

The time has come to make a decision. It may throw you light years ahead or it could throw you back. Risk, for you, is a part of the job. You're known for your impeccable judgement calls but you don't want to take any chance. Years and years of planning could go down in seconds. Your mind palace is the reason for you being what you are. The sole reason for your existence, the sole reason for your survival. You sit down on the chair and close your eyes. You place your hands over your ears, covering them completely. You begin focusing. The week goes by your mind like a flash. The things you did, the people you met, the things you saw but all in reverse. You continue to rewind the week in your mind because it is quite important for you to remember every single thing right from the beginning. The images continue to flash across your mind at a tremendous speed.

Suddenly, you open your eyes in horror. There has been a terrible mistake. This mistake could lead you to what you fear the most, 'A Loss'. If anyone is smart enough to find you're mistake, it's him, Harry McCarthy. You close your eyes again, take a deep breath and try calling down. Panicking will only make the newly created scene seem worse than it already is. Your only option now is to assess the situation and find a way out of it. Long experience has taught you that covering up your mistakes can cost you dearly. There is a difference between covering up your tracks and covering on for your mistakes and it is, when you cover up for your mistake, you end up making people aware about it in the first place. But you have to get out of this mess before it is even created. The stakes are very high and you don't want to take any unnecessary steps, not because you fear being wrong but because it'll do nothing but eat up your ever-so precious time. You have to find a way out of it, by hook or by crook. Covering up for the mistake won't be the hard part, covering up the cover will be. You just need to make a few phone calls to set things right. However, the people doing the job for you will suddenly be a constant threat to you. You trust no one but yourself. The person on the other end of the phone may be a snitch, an undercover cop, the reason to your downfall. You can never be too sure. So you start figuring out what are the odds of the mistake being seen or being noticed. The chances are quite miniscule but you cannot afford to ignore it, can you?

You get up from your chair and head towards the door. It isn't a big room, just a door, a cupboard, a table, two chairs, a single bed and a bag full of burner phones. You reach out for the bag and take out a random phone. The good thing about burners is that the calls made from it cannot be traced on tapped. You flip the phone open and start dialing. You give the guy on the other end of the phone the job and instruct him quite carefully. You end the phone call, remove the battery, throw the phone on the floor, stamp on it several times till it breaks and then throw the battery and the remains of the phone into the trash.

You now walk towards the cupboard and open it. It seems empty at first. It has two sections which are divided by a drawer right in the middle. The upper section is for hanging coats, etc and the lower section is subdivided into three more horizontal compartments. You crouch down low and slide your hand underneath the last compartment and move your hand around until you find an irregularity in shape. You push the button and stand back up just in time to witness the opening of the back of the cupboard. The entrance leads to a room. A room full of secrets, a room which helps you carry out daily jobs, a room which has been vital in your survival.

You scan your surroundings yo make sure no one's watching and get into the room. You turn around switch on the lights and turn back. The room is divided into four sections. You walk by the first one which you call the job room. This is where you have framed all your success stories and hung them up on the wall. You have the contracts for the jobs as well. There are ninety-nine photographs on the wall and you're in search for your hundredth one. Hopefully this'll be it. The next section is as you call it the resource room. This room is filled with weapons, ammo, protection gear. Basically everything you need to complete the jobs violently, is in this room. You pick up the Poison Dart. It has been your favorite weapon for quite a while now. It is easy to use, easy to hide. The victims die a very clean and silent death. It makes your task quite easy. You pick up four darts and place them in your right suit pocket. You pick two more and place them inside your pant's left pocket. You're left handed and hence it becomes easier for you to take the darts out. You pick up the dart blower and place it inside your tie. It is just ten centimeters long yet so effective. The next two sections are not needed to be visited for now and hence you trace your steps back to the room, close the door.

You are now fully equipped for tonight. You scan your surroundings again to make sure no one was looking. You pick up your car keys, your room keys and leave the room.

"They have to die. But they'll die after the job's done. It is the safest way, the only way." you think to yourself.
