Chapter 10
Cisco came into the observation room and banged the door shut. The observation room wasn't too furnished, just five chairs and a table. The main purpose was to look at what the suspect was doing in the other room through the one way mirror. The room was quite pale even though it was recently painted. The color olive green made it look pale. Jackson was standing right in front of the mirror trying to observe Harry's behavior.
"The guy is strange. He's been silent so far, he's not nervous nor alarmed. He knows his rights and knows when to speak. He has that strange sense of calm even though he knows he's into trouble" he continued, "You think he's done it?" He asked Cisco without taking his eyes of Harry.
"Dunno that, he hasn't fucking confessed yet." answered Cisco in an angry tone. He was quite irritated. He'd never lead an interrogation before. Just simulated ones or he'd assist others to it and now, he was desperate to start off on a good note.
"No I meant, do you think he's really done it?" asked Jackson.
"Dunno, don't care, not my job brother. My job is to get the truth outta him. Besides he's been on our side plenty of times to know a lot of things he shouldn't know. So he definitely knows how to keep things to himself."
"So how are you gonna get him to talk?"
"That's what I'm trying to figure out. This guy has no weaknesses, no pressure points, no family, there isn't a speck of dust or dirt on his file that I can hold him to. He doesn't have an address nor family nor any sort of ID with him."
"So, what's next?"
"What's next is, I'm gonna break him anyway. I just need that one spark which is enough to start a forest fire."
"But he's not that dumb, is he? I mean you'll obviously need to find some definitive proof soon enough for him to start speaking."
"Yes I'm quite aware of it Jackson. He's very smart. Too smart. He has an excellent cop record" said a visibly impressed Cisco as he picked up and went through his file again, "He's been awarded with titles that we haven't even dreamt of! What I am starting to wonder is, what amount of hate can make such a decorated cop turn into a killer!"
"I don't think he's done it though. If he would've, he wouldn't be foolish enough to leave any evidence. Especially when he knows everything about solving a crime. And also, why would a guy like him kill Matt?" Jackson said while still observing Harry.
"We'll know that soon enough. Till then, I want you to trace every single step, movement of his of the last four days. Get me his phone records, if he has any. I want every fucking detail that we can get our hands on. Go around the town with his photo, ask in each and every motel around about him. We will definitely get a lead then."
"Yes I'll do that Cisco but you gotta let him speak. We still need to keep our options open."
"Why are you so fucking concerned about this guy, man!" Cisco exclaimed, "Why are you trying to get me to take on the other angle in this case on every frigging step I take?"
"Because you're not thinking straight that's why!" Even Jackson increase his voice, "ever since he's been taken in, all you're trying to do is to get him to sign the confession. I know we have to work under the assumption that each of our suspect can be the murderer but what you're doing, it's not called assuming, it's called forcing your view on the others. That's not how we operate."
Cisco grew quiet. He suddenly realized that somewhere down the line, Jackson was correct.
"But I need my answers, Jackson. And I'm gonna have to kick some ass there if he doesn't gimme those." Cisco said quietly.
"That's better. And don't worry, he'll answer now. Look at his face. He's definitely realized that staying silent is no more an option for him. I'll get you his records while you break him." Saying that, Jackson left the room and Cisco found himself alone, observing Harry. He thought for a while and then he left the room too.
