…!?
You feel like you dreamt about something very stressing, but you can’t recall what the dream was about. Another thing you can feel is a heavy weight on your chest, literally. Opening up your eyes, you see a bunch of golden locks. Together with her ocean-blue eyes and the rising sun hitting her face with just the right angle, Elise kind of resembles one of the common depictions of an angel - A spoiled angel sitting with her complete weight on your poor chest.
“Good morning (Y/N)!” The little girl smiles brightly.
You yawn. “Good morning… Could you maybe get off me? Your knees kinda hurt my ribs…”
Without hesitation she follows your request and helps you up as well. She uses a tad too much strength for that, but at least you are awake now.
“Why where you on top of me though?”, you ask.
“You looked so adorable while sleeping!”
Mori, who is sitting at his desk, organizes a stack of paper. His lips form a subtle smile, but he isn’t looking in your direction. “Did you have a nightmare? You seemed a bit distressed even before Elise sat down on top of you.”
With a deadpan expression you look back and forth between those two. “…How long where you two watching me in my sleep?”
Mori looks at his clock. “We weren’t watching you for the whole time but we came here around 20 minutes ago. You are quite a heavy sleeper, I have to say.”
A unpleasant shiver goes down your spine. ”Never again will I sleep in a room that I can’t lock. Creeps.” You clear your throat. “Well, usually I would have woken up faster. I guess I was just very tired as I didn’t properly sleep for a few days…”
“I sincerely hope that for you. Otherwise, that characteristic could kill you one day.” Eyes closed for a few seconds and the smile wider, Mori now looks at you.
Another shiver follows the previous one. “I will… keep that in mind… Thank you.”
The threatening undertone has disappeared again. “Anyways, as promised, I looked for a job that comes into consideration for you and I actually found one. We need someone who handles and organizes information for the Port Mafia as a whole. The information is going to be mostly already concluded matters and internal intel. So, what do you say, (Y/N)?”
“This sounds like a important position… How can it be that it is unoccupied?”
“The person who was in charge of it before unfortunately died.”
“Naturally or…?” Your heartbeat quickens.
“Through a clean headshot from the front. That’s why you will have to train plenty at the beginning. Some information are more valuable than gold so you have to have the capability to protect them and yourself. But that’s the only risk you have to face as you don’t have to interact with those outside the Mafia.”
“Okay… Isn’t it kind of risky though to entrust a job like that to a random kid you found on the streets the day before? I could be some sort of spy or just incompetent. That wouldn’t be beneficial for you at all.”
“Yes, I am aware of that. I wasn’t able to find out anything about your past and will have to believe what you told Elise, so it is certainly a gamble to hire you. I will keep an eye on you, but as long as you aren’t a top-notch actor, I am sure that a meek person like you won’t betray me. And if you still decide to do that, let me tell you this: The Port Mafia punishes betrayal severely. Therefore I would advise highly against it.” Despite the seriousness of his words, Mori’s expression is somewhere between relaxed and playful.
“No, no. I am not that… stupid. I accept your offer and will do my best at it.”
Both Mori and Elise seem pleased with your answer. If you think about it now: What would they have done if you rejected them? Would they have made you mysteriously disappear for knowing too much or would they have done nothing at all? Your life expectancy isn’t particularly high without assistance so maybe getting rid of you isn’t worth it. You shake your head. Whatever it would have been, there is no point in pondering on it now. You have said what you have said and there is no turning back from that decision.
“Great! I am happy to welcome you the Port Mafia. Here, a welcoming gift.”, Mori points at the box on his desk.
Having opened it, you see a single key laying on top of clothes.
“The key is for the small apartment you will be staying at from now on and since you can’t work in those ragged clothes I also got a new outfit for you. I hope you like it.”
You pick up the shirt on top of the pile. It is a clean white one with black buttons. Beneath it is a pair of black trousers and black shoes. Overall simple, but formal.
Elise tucks at the hem of your old t-shirt. “Have you seen the ducklings?”
“What ducklings?”
“On the bottom of the shirt. She insisted on giving you something with a cute touch.”, explains Mori with a chuckle.
Looking properly this time you see an embroidery of a small yellow duck family. “It looks… cute.” Very random, but cute nevertheless. Before you can add anything, Mori’s phone rings.
He picks up the call and talks for a while. Only hearing Mori’s answers, you are unable to really understand what the call is about. After a few minutes he ends it. “Unfortunately, I have to cut our time short. Some urgent matter has to be taken care of. Originally I wanted to take you to the headquarters, but that will have to wait for next time. Somebody else will pick you up from here, take you to your apartment so that you can take a shower and get changed and then they will take you to your new working place.”, he says while packing his things.
“Oh, alright. Could you tell me how they looks like so that I don’t go with the wrong person?”
“He has orange hair, wears a particular hat and is rather short for his age. Normally, I wouldn’t send somebody like him to pick you up, but thanks to the unforeseen changes, he is the best current option. And now, please excuse us. Come Elise, we need to go.” He takes the girl’s hand who waves you goodbye. “Until we see each other again, (Y/N).”
“Bye…”
Not wanting to wait here for too long, you leave the doctor’s office with your box shortly after them. Outside, you sit down on some stairs. ”They must be really understaffed right now that Mori has to send an executive to pick me up… On the other hand I guess is Chuuya not a bad option. I hope we will somehow get along or else this will be a little awkward…”
