In the morning, after sharing breakfast with some pack members, Ember stood outside, her gaze fixed on the grassy trail that some of the group would take that day. She cradled her elbows in her hands as her eyes scanned the trees in the distance. A peculiar movement among the larger trees caught her attention, causing her to squint in an attempt to discern the source. Something had stirred amidst the foliage, something unusually large.
Without hesitation, Ember reentered the house to alert Ruby about what she had just witnessed.
"Something was out there," she whispered urgently.
"What do you think it was?" Ruby inquired, her curiosity piqued.
"I don't know, but it wasn't small."
"We should tell the others."
Ember hesitated, then replied, "No. It might have been a bear or something."
"Ember, there are no bears out here."
"We don't know that."
Alara, alerted by the sudden shift in their conversation's tone, briefly paused her meal and glanced at the girls. Fortunately, they were the only ones present at the moment.
"Let's keep it down a notch," Ruby suggested in a hushed tone.
"Forget it. It was a bear, and that's what I'm sticking with," Ember asserted, folding her arms and crossing her legs in determination, while Ruby rolled her eyes at her friend's stubbornness.
