A dark room, the only sign of light peeking from beyond the thick curtains. In a corner of the room, a young man woke up from his light sleep. He rose with half closed eyes, walked towards the curtain and started opening it. As the curtain slid from left to right, the clear, sliding window showered the room with golden rays of light that illuminated the dark room that it once was. Despite the spectacle, his cold eyes and expressionless face remained the same. For him this is just another morning, another day living with no motivation in life. He lives like a dead fish, floating in a river with no destination in mind as he lets the flow of the river bring him wherever it leads to. He knows that at the very least, if he can graduate from highschool he can then apply for a state college, pick a course that can give him a degree to live a life with decent salary and minimal working hours. Living like this is sufficient for him, and the thought of having a life partner never crosses his mind. He then scanned his room to find his phone and check the time. As he clicked the power button, the screen lit up, showing the time and a few new messages.

"Will you be able to attend the celebration, Lanz?

"That would be my only wish..."

"She still doesn't understand. It's not like I'm welcomed to her new family.

"And I would never get along with that vermin."

The young man named Lanz clicked the power button again and prepared himself to attend his classes. His usual routine is to have store bought meal for his breakfast. As he opened the door to his apartment, his neighbour was coincidentally on her way to her apartment when they met.

"Good morning Lanz. I just got home from shopping for the ingredients of my breakfast. As thanks for yesterday, would you like to join me?"

The old lady was his neighbour next door, and he helped her dispose of an old furniture in her household. She's dressed eccentrically and the interior of her house is filled with fortune telling instruments. It seems like she's a popular fortune teller in the area.

"Good morning ms. Rivera. I'm sorry but I need to go." Lanz said with a smile after nodding lightly.

"Is that so? Then you can have this. It's a very effective lucky charm, but it doesn't possess much monetary value. Just enough for a few healthy breakfasts." Rivera said with a chuckle.

Lanz reached out to the pendant that has an amethyst crystal hanging from it. It seems expensive but he can not be certain because he's not an expert, so he accepted it and said:

"Thank you. You didn't really need to but perhaps a bit of luck in my life is just what I need." Lanz said with a grin. He does believe in the concept of luck, but as for if it really was a lucky charm, he just accepted it for it came from a somewhat famous fortune teller.

"Then take care. I just realised that it doesn't really suit a young man like you. Perhaps you can gift it to your mother and reconcile." As Lanz smile became stiff, his body froze in place. Rivera entered her apartment and left the young man alone. Lanz pondered for a moment and started walking towards his destination, a convenience store that sells decently nutritious meal but bland in taste.

"Does she like meddling into other people's problems? How did she even knew about our circumstances? Well, I do have a guess to that question..." Lanz mutters to himself as he places the pendant into the pocket in his shirt.

Lanz walked on his way towards the convenience store, bought his meal and brought it to a nearby park to eat it. The convenience store has its own table and chair for customers to use but Lanz preferred eating in the park where he can see plenty of trees and less of the urban buildings that stood everywhere outside the park. Enjoying nature is one thing he appreciate.

"Can't taste it, they don't seem to season it properly. But it's cheap and it satiates me plenty."

Lanz said to himself as he drinks the bottled milk he bought in the convenience store with his meal. He walked towards the station after tidying up the table he used. As he arrived on the station, he saw a thin man with tanned skin wearing ragged clothes sitting on the floor near the entrance of the station extending his hand towards the people passing by.

He chose to ignore it and continued walking forward. While listening to the clanking sounds that the coin changes he got from his purchases in his shirt pocket made, he thought to himself:

"Pitiful. He clings to his life when it's filled with suffering and with no hope of making it better when he's earning barely to live. Or perhaps it is in the nature of all living beings to desperately cling to life even when they're against all odds. It reminds me of a certain experiment I heard where they drowned rats. Rats that were given hope of being saved will struggle longer than those that aren't."

He made way to his usual spot, standing where the doors of the train will stop in its place. He knows that if the train is in schedule as usual then it won't even take a minute until the train arrives. As he did so, he noticed a commotion on the direction opposite of where the train comes from. He looked at his left for a second and chose to ignore the commotion as he looked towards his right, awaiting for the arrival of the train. After a few seconds, the rumbling of the train was heard more clearly, alarming him of its timely arrival.

While expecting the train, he was surprised when he heard a shout come from the direction of the commotion.

"MOVE!"

As he heard the noise behind him, he hurriedly stepped forward and turned around. But it was his mistake, as that caused him to stand near the edge of the platform, the running man who shouted still bumped into him despite his efforts. The impact pushed him, the sound of train few in distance beside him deafening, the pendant and coins in his pocket scattering into air, his life flashed before his eyes.

As he tried to reach out towards the pendant that seemed to glow with an eerie dim light, he pondered his own pitiful existence.

"I'm the pitiful one, aren't I?" He whispered while smiling.

Bright light enveloped him as he lost his senses and entered a state of being in daze.

Authors note: When the double quotation marks doesn't end, it means that the dialogue of that specific character hasn't ended yet.

Example:

"I'll be there later.

"I'll meet you there, see ya!"

These means that only a single character spoke, and these two lines are actually connected. I tend to cut them for better readability.

But if it had double quotation mark in the end of the sentence, it does mean that the dialogue is finished already.

Example:

"I'll be there later."

"I'll meet you there, see ya!"

In this case, there are two people speaking to one another.

Now of course italic means that the character is speaking in his mind (this is mostly done by the main character since I'm not sure if I'll use other character's pov)
