It was nighttime when Angelina stirred from slumber, her phone ringing in the pitch-black room. The only source of illumination seeped through the window. She fumbled for the phone and croaked, "Hello?"
"Angel, it's me. How are you?" Paul's voice on the other end jolted Angelina back to full consciousness.
Angelina tried to sit up slowly and grimaced. "I'm feeling a bit dizzy. I overslept since noon and just woke up."
A long sigh came from the telephone. "You must have forgotten to take your medicine."
Angelina blinked. That's right, when did I last take my medicine?
"Doctor Sandi and Mr. Mukti are here. I told them you were fine, but they insisted on talking to you."
Do they want to ask about Siti? Angelina's brows furrowed in confusion. Her former coworkers' behavior was strange.
"Doctor Angelina," Doctor Sandi's voice greeted Angelina a few seconds later. "I heard that you had an accident."
"Yes, but I'm fine now. What's wrong with Siti? Sorry, I forgot to call back."
"Like usual, eating garbage from visitors. I intend to perform the surgery, but I'm having trouble finding a partner. The new doctor assigned is inexperienced. Can you help? I'm worried that if I keep delaying it, it will be dangerous for her."
"Doctor Sandi, Angel is already working elsewhere. I don't think it's ethical to disturb her for another job. Angel is also still recovering."
Angelina was silent when she heard Paul's voice. Her husband seemed to be getting annoyed with Doctor Sandi's strange behavior.
"This is important, sir," Angelina heard Mr. Mukti's reply to Paul's words. "If Siti dies, we will lose the only female gorilla old enough for fertilization."
"I don't care about the gorilla breeding process. Your attitude is disturbing!"
"Paul," Angelina called her husband's name. She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly to ease the pain in her head. "Please, I want to talk to my husband."
"Hello!" Paul's exasperated voice pounded her eardrums.
"Paul, please don't fight," Angelina pleaded. "On Saturday, I'll be there to help Doctor Sandi."
"But you're still recovering!" he protested. "Your coworkers' behavior is very unprofessional!"
Angelina suddenly took a quick breath when she heard a similar sentence often uttered by crazy people in this building. The woman reflexively rebuked her husband. "Paul! Stop saying that line! I hate hearing that!"
The ringing in her ears caused her to grimace. Dang it! Dang it! Dang it!
"Angel, take it easy." Paul's tone softened. "Take the medicine and rest. I'll ask Dr. Reiner if you can stay off work."
"Paul, don't," Angelina interrupted. She was about to repeat the same mistake of revealing the truth. Fortunately, her tongue managed to stop just in time. "Don't keep on bothering him. I'm okay. Please tell Doctor Sandi that I will help him this Saturday. I miss Bowo too."
There was silence for a moment before Paul finally said, "Angel, remember to eat first before taking the medicine. I'll pick you up on Saturday morning."
"Okay." Angelina hung up the telephone and got up to press a lamp switch.
A sudden blinding light made her eyes squint. She looked at the clock and found it was already past eight at night.
