Wood creaks and feet tap softly in the night
Mother is bunching a few clothes up tight
Into a worn pillowcase they go
The children must hurry before he comes home
But nothing is going according to plan
A child starts to cry cause they can't take the cat
The oldest realizes the crying must stop
The youngest has taken off both of her socks
The dog nextdoor barks and the front door lock snaps
Mother grabs everything and runs out the back
Inside a voice growls for them to return
She cradles one near and pulls the other one's hem
But why is he sober and where is her oldest?
His voice screams to run and remember he took classes
Save the young first and come back for the other
Though there's no choice, she is still a mother
