We sat together, sharing a meal as if we'd known each other for years. Conversation flowed easily between us, and we even played a few games together, laughing like old friends. Kai was full of surprises. I found out he was from Florida, had two brothers, and was the middle child. He was smart, quick-witted, and had a sense of humor that made it impossible not to smile.
As the evening went on, Kai picked up his guitar and started playing some of my favorite songs. His fingers moved effortlessly over the strings, filling the room with music that seemed to soothe my troubled mind. For a moment, I almost forgot about Alex—my girlfriend. The thought of her jolted me back to reality. We hadn't spoken since my parents' divorce, and it had been three whole days without a word from her. It felt strange, like something was off. But I brushed the feeling aside and grabbed my phone, deciding to give her a call.
The call rang and rang, but she didn't pick up. She's probably busy, I told myself, trying to ignore the unease creeping up on me. I sent her a quick text, asking her to call me when she could. It wasn't the first time we'd gone days without talking, but something about this time felt different. She knew what was going on with my family, and yet... silence.
I couldn't shake the feeling of missing her. It gnawed at me, so I decided to go to the café where we used to hang out together. Maybe being there would bring me some comfort. I put on a cute outfit, trying to lift my spirits, and headed for the door. But before I could leave, Kai stopped me.
"Never seen you dress up so pretty. What's the occasion?" he asked, a teasing smile playing on his lips.
"Very funny," I shot back, rolling my eyes. "I'm going out to a café I used to go to. Wanna tag along?"
"Sure! Why not?" he replied, grabbing his jacket.
As we walked to the café, I noticed a few changes—new decorations, a different menu—but the place still felt familiar. Walking in, I saw Luke behind the counter, his familiar face bringing a smile to mine.
"Luke! Damn, my guy, you look good!" I called out.
"Jade! Haven't seen you around in a while. And who's this?" he asked, nodding toward Kai with a puzzled expression. "He's not your new boyfriend, is he?"
"Of course not!" I laughed, shaking my head. "I would never cheat on my girl like that, Luke. Grow up! He's just a new friend."
Luke's expression shifted, a flash of something unreadable in his eyes before he quickly covered it up. "Wait, so you guys haven't broken up?"
"No! What do you mean, though?" I asked, my curiosity piqued by his odd behavior.
"Oh, nothing! What would you like?" he asked, avoiding my question.
"Okay... For me, the usual, and for him, a matcha latte!" I replied, still feeling a bit off about Luke's reaction.
We sat down at our table, chatting away as if nothing was wrong. But then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a familiar face. It was Alex. My heart leaped, and I immediately stood up, ready to run to her, to wrap her in my arms because I had missed her so much. But before I could take a step, I saw someone else walk in behind her and hold her hand.
I froze.
They were holding hands.
My mind tried to make sense of it. Maybe it's just a friend, I told myself, trying to quell the rising panic. I walked in with Kai, after all, and he was just a friend. But something felt off. I watched them as they ordered together, moving as one unit, and then took a seat across the café. I forced myself to sit back down, but Kai noticed the worry on my face.
"You okay?" he asked, concern lacing his voice.
"Huh? Yeah, completely fine!" I lied, my voice betraying my anxiety.
"O...kay..??" Kai responded, clearly not convinced.
I tried to focus on our conversation, but my eyes kept drifting back to Alex. The guy sitting with her couldn't seem to keep his hands off her, and every touch sent a wave of anger crashing over me. I was furious—so furious that all I saw was red. I pushed back my chair, determined to confront them, but then... I saw it.
They kissed.
The world around me shattered in an instant. My breath caught in my throat as I watched the person I loved more than anything kiss someone else, right in front of me. She hadn't even bothered to call, to check if I was okay. She hadn't cared.
Tears welled up in my eyes, blurring my vision as they spilled over, tracing hot, angry paths down my cheeks. I was broken—mentally, physically, emotionally. The weight of betrayal crushed me, leaving me feeling empty and alone.
