My chest hurt. It had never felt that way before. I groaned and reached to touch my middle. Bandages were wrapped around it, and something stung in my arm, preventing me from moving it further. I opened one eye to see a tube attached to a bag of something black.

A strange man I had never seen before sat across from me on a chair. He had a tube attached to his arm too. His other arm was propped up, supporting his head as he dozed off. His dark hair and general demeanor reminded me of someone, but I couldn't place who/

Black liquid. Demons blood! He was a demon! And he was poisoning me!

I screamed and ripped the tube out of my arm before falling off the bed and hitting my face on the hard floor.

"What the fuck are you doing?" He grumbled, it was a tired voice that seemed to be done with my crap even though I had done very little.

"Trying to stop you from poisoning me with your tainted blood, demon!" I cried, rolling over to all fours and slowly standing up. My body protested but it behaved. My legs shook underneath me, unsteady. "Why am I not dead yet?"

The demon stood up from his chair. "I was trying to save you. You're half demon, you're a nephilim and you lost a lot of blood. Besides," he said, walking towards me. "If I had wanted you dead, I would've left you to bleed out, but Amaya didn't want that."

Oh yes, that was who he reminded me of, Amaya. Same dark hair and dark eye, almost identical facial features. "Where is Amaya? She said she was going to teach me the ways of the world."

He raised a brow. "So that's how it is. . ."

"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked, getting irritated that I had more questions and no answers.

"Nothing." He coughed. "My name is Dawn, I'm Amaya's brother. Or at least, I thought I was."

I sighed loudly and sat on the floor. "And what does that mean? You are a very confusing demon."

Dawn flopped onto the ground next to me, his face pale and drawn. "Well, she fell into a church and popped out angel wings."

"Wait. . . That can't be right, I was sent to kill her, I would never be tasked with killing another angel. . . Wait you called me a nephilim, nephilim's have dirty blood, they're killed by both angels and demons. I wouldn't be working for heaven if I was a nephilim." I wrapped my arms around my knees and drew them into my chest. This was all too much to take in. It didn't make any sense. But here I was with demon blood in my veins and I wasn't dying. That alone was proof enough to support his cause.

"What do we do now?" My voice was barely above a whisper. I couldn't summon the strength within me to speak louder. Now that I had demons' blood in my veins, I couldn't go back to heaven, they'd slaughter me. "How do we get Amaya back if we can't cross on to holy ground?"

Letting out a long breath, Dawn got up and looked out the window. "We find a poor, underpaid sap looking for a big buck and make them fetch her for us."

"And where will we find such a desperate human?" I asked, pushing myself to my feet and walking over to the window to see where his gaze had drifted to.

Dawn smiled and draped an arm over my shoulders. "Starbucks."

.... .... .... .... .... ....

"You want me to what!" Seth, which was apparently this barista's name, did not seem interested in the way that Dawn had declared.

"Go into the Catholic Church a few blocks down, rescue my sister, and bring her out to us," Dawn stated blankly. "I'm willing to compensate you well."

Seth shook his head. "If the church kidnapped her you should involve the police. This is their job, not mine. . . Why can't you just go get her yourself?" He raised a red brow, looking us up and down with disapproval. "I saw this girl get hit by a car and walk away, she's basically invincible. But me? In a church? I'm so gay I might burst into flames."

"I mean, I haven't seen that many gays in hell," Dawn stated with a shrug. "Most of them are good people, the big guy doesn't let us have any fun with the fruity people. Queers know how to throw the craziest parties. I've been to pride a few years in a row and god damn nothing compares."

Looking left and right, Seth leaned forward on the counter towards us. "How much are you going to pay me?"

Dawn slammed down a stack of bills. I didn't see the significance of human money, but from the way Seth's eyes lit up, I assumed it was quite a bit.

"I'll give it to you the instant our deal is done. Get Amaya out, get your money, then we can go our separate ways," Dawn said coolly as he tucked the stack back into his pocket. "Meet you behind the church after dark, come dressed appropriately. Button up and tie. No one will suspect you aren't a devout catholic coming to mass." Dawn placed a device on the countertop and slid it across the counter to give to seth. "Keep it hidden but stay in contact with me at all times. She won't be kept in a normal spot, you're going to have to explore the whole church to find her."

Seth took the device and put it into his pocket. "Remind me again why you can't go?"

"We're demons."

I cringed at the reality. I had never identified as a demon, and now I was nothing more than the scum of the earth.

"Do your eyes turn black when you possess people? What does holy water do to you?" Seth asked, clicking a pen and placing it in a notebook.

"I don't possess people and I'd assume holy water would make my clothes wet? But holy and wet?" Dawn looked at him with disgust. "These are stupid questions. You can't trust human media, it lies."

"Now are you in or not?"

"I'm in," Seth said. "I'll meet you at the church a block down. Which direction though? Cause there are two of them."

"My left, two blocks down, the Catholic Church," Dawn said before turning around and leaving. "Hell is full of liars so you better not no show on me."

We turned around and left, waiting for the chaos that night fall would bring.
