Chapter Fourteen: Getting Down and Dirty

The building's got closer, shabbier, leaning against each other as if the slightest gust of wind might cause them to fall, one by one. Alleyways like snakes slithered between them, hidden away where even moonbeams didn't dare to shine. A shiver traveled down my spine, making the open wounds in my back ache, reminding me I was still weak and would prove useless in a fight if it came to it. This was the place where those who didn't want their business known gathered, or the poor sods who couldn't afford to live somewhere safe enough for their children to go outside.

Would it hurt to lose feathers? Or would it feel like a simple haircut? I had no idea. Perhaps knowing where I came from wasn't worth it. We could turn the minivan around now and never talk to Dawn's shady friend. Yet, there was this deep longing to know what happened, how an angel with a demon's tail ended up raised by the king of hell himself. How my wings were locked away. Why a Bible brought them back out. It could be malicious, perhaps I was the daughter of my fathers enemy. Stolen and cursed to get revenge on some angel. Or maybe, I was rescued cause I wasn't good enough to be an angel. I could have been an abandoned child, left in a cardboard box like a liter of kittens in the alleyway. The question I most wanted answers to was whether my father was my kidnapper or savior.

Evangeline never woke after falling asleep on my lap. Dawn had to rearrange her to put her in the car beside me. A bump rocked her around, causing her head to land on my shoulder. I leaned my head down, touching it to hers. Having my little angel was almost like having an emotional support animal. She helped me stay calm. All she had to do was be there and I felt safer.

I reached out my hand, brushing her finger tips. A spark of warmth ran up my arm from the contact. I was playing a dangerous game. The whole reason I never stayed with a woman more than one night was cause I wasn't the relationship type. I didn't want to invest my life into someone so that they could break my heart and soul. So why in the ever living hell did I want to now?

A few days ago, I would've been sitting on the college steps, scouting my next innocent to soil. Now, I was beside this little angel, and all I wanted was to spend time with her, hold her, adore her, protect her. Yet there was this raging passion inside me that wanted to fuck her from dawn to dusk, and for that reason, I needed to keep my distance.

I pushed Evangeline back towards her side of the car and took deep breaths in an attempt to clear my mind. Why was I making an effort to keep myself from getting into her pants when she clearly wanted it? This didn't make any sense. But. . . What if this was another instance of her saying something she didn't understand? Did she even have any idea she was coming on to me?

Looking at her resting face I had no idea what to believe. Unless I could prove without a shadow of question that she wanted to sleep with me, I wouldn't entertain the idea. It wouldn't do either of us any good if I did.

My body flew forward, slamming into the front seats and then my head was thrown back as Dawn slammed on the breaks.

"Get out of the road, hoe!" He cried, revving the engine. "If you don't move, imma make some splatter art on these streets!"

"How creative of you, Dawn, just go around like a normal demon," I grumbled, rubbing my neck from the whiplash the stop caused.

The scantily clothed woman climbed on the hood of the car, sat down, and flipped Dawn off. "Make me!"

Evangeline stirred, likely woken from all the shouting. "What's going on?"

"Dawn pissed off a whore so they're sitting on the car," Seth stated. "I don't know why we couldn't have just gone around them."

The car moved forward then jerked to a stop. "Get off!" Dawn gripped the steering wheel tightly. He hit the gas and slammed the brake repeatedly, until the whore fell off the car then sped off. "Stupid whores, think they can sit on my car."
