Our exchanges hadn't gone unnoticed and Cathrina emerged from the kitchen door, which was situated on the left of the dining room where we were seated.

"Miss, do we have a guest?" she enquired, her eyes scanning the table and eventually landing on Cain.

"Catherina, Cain's here," I chirped, happy to see him after a month.

However, Cathrina's expression didn't mirror mine and said otherwise. Growing up here, I've noticed that the help around here, didn't really like Cain and avoided him whenever possible. They went as far as changing their direction on seeing him, which didn't sit well with me.

I can say Cain is not all cheerful kind of person but he is not even abrasive. He is all mean looking and not at all approachable but he never raised his voice at anyone, not even the time when I annoyed him to death.

He shared every trait with his father, Isaac, yet people liked Isaac and not him, not even the people who had been there throughout his life.

Which is why I have my reservations about all the household help, well, except for Catherina though and I have my reasons for that but her delicious cooking is not one of them... maybe it is.

Sometimes, I feel upset on his behalf. How cannot anyone like him, he is all sweet, soft and filled with everything warm and nice.

"Young sir. Please give me a minute." Catherina's stuttering brought me out of my thoughts.

"Thank you, Catherina. But I've already eaten," Cain politely declined. It was moments like this that baffled me. How can anyone not like him when he is so polite?

Catherina let out a visible sigh and hurriedly retreated back into the kitchen. The silence that stretched when she left was deafening.

"Well, if you're so determined to leave this old man behind, so be it," Isaac finally broke the silence, agreeing without Cain having to back me up.

"Zio, don't be like that. First of all, you're in no way an old man. I've never seen someone in their late fifties as bulky and fit as you. Never. You literally look like you're in your late thirties. And secondly, I'm not leaving you; I'll be back in no time and you can visit me whenever you like."

My words brought a smile to Issac's lips, one he tried to hide by dabbing his mouth with a piece of cloth and his smile was contagious.

"Okay, flattering me won't get you anywhere, Everlee."

Isaac retorted but I couldn't help but challenge him. "Are you sure about that?" I teased, my mischievous smile spreading across my face.

"If you've made up your mind, then I'll look into finding a suitable place for you to stay, near your college." Isaac conceded and I called onto Catherina to heat up his coffee which went cold.

I smiled up at him, mischievously from across the table, "Well, that..."

Isaac raised an eyebrow. "Well, what, Everlee?"
