I understand that it may sound a bit like I am carrying my autism around like some 500k diamond for everyone to see but - I doubt it is something you are proud of...

Wouldn't you think it to be important to make people just aware of your challenges so they know to understand and how to react in certain situations? Obviously yes! But what (at least for me) is crucial for how I perceive you is how you react to it.

Quick How-To Guide for non-autistic friends:

DO: Oh! Thanks you for telling me about your diagnosis. Please tell me more about it so I know how to react when you behave this or that way or need support/help. And please, remember you are still my friend and I won't treat you differently!

DON'T(!!!): Lol! You are autistic? like those weird kids that can't talk and are in their own world? Hey Mom! That's my friend ...! He is autistic!

For Gods sake, no one wants to be treated like some exotic animal... And yeah, I encountered those people already...

Of course, don't panic - you are of course not expected to have a degree in psychology, but just talking with individuals with autism is always helpful.
