                        chapter 2

As Sophia entered the house, her mother, Rosinda, tried to strike up a conversation. "So, how was work?" she asked with a genuine concern, attempting to bridge the gap that had grown between them. Sophia, however, chose to ignore her, her demeanor distant and guarded.

"Sophy, I'm talking to you," Rosinda persisted, her maternal instincts kicking in. "As a mom who cares..."

Sophia interrupted with a sharp tone, her pent-up frustrations bubbling to the surface. "Since when did you care? And please don't 'Sophy' me. You don't deserve to call me your daughter."

"I'm just trying to be a mom for Chris's sake," Rosinda retorted, her voice tinged with hurt. "Don't tell me you're not over that small argument."

Sophia's eyes flashed with anger. "Of course, it's always a minor thing to you, since you don't care that much. That's your area of expertise. I'm off to bed. Good night, Mom."

"Aren't you going to eat? Honey, I cooked your favorite," Rosinda pleaded, attempting to salvage the situation.

"I'm not hungry," Sophia responded curtly. "But, sweetie..."

"Mom, please... let me be, please," she implored before storming off to her room.

This strained mother-daughter relationship was all too familiar to Sophia. Her mom's inability to understand her and her tendency to shift blame had fueled Sophia's growing resentment.

Later that evening, as Sophia pondered what to wear for the party, Bella barged into the room, excitement in her eyes.

"Hey, girlfriend! Guess what I got for you?"

"Bella, what are you doing here? And what do you have?" Sophia inquired, both curious and slightly annoyed.

"I somehow knew you wouldn't get the perfect outfit for the party, so I brought you a gown and mask," Bella declared with a grin.

"Bella, I thought we talked about this. I want to choose my own dress."

"Come on, Sophia. I can't let you look like a clown at my crush's party, and besides, it matches with mine. We will be twinning," Bella insisted, her talkative nature in full swing.

"Bella, I..."

"No 'buts.' I'm not taking 'no' for an answer. Put it on. See? It's cute," she exclaimed, forcing Sophia into the dress.

"OMG, girlfriend! Is that Selena Gomez or what?" Bella teased.

"Shut up, Bella."

"You'll surely get your Justin Bieber tonight. You look amazing, 'Giggles Gabby,'" Bella said, referring to the nickname Sophia disliked.

"I told you to stop calling me that, Bella. But thanks a lot; you're the best. I honestly had nothing to wear."

"Anything for you, my 'Giggles Gabby,'" Bella quipped with a mischievous grin.

Sophia couldn't help but laugh. Bella had a way of bringing out the best in her, even during moments of frustration.

                     **************

As they arrived at the party, Sophia was taken aback by the lively atmosphere. "Didn't expect it to be this full," she remarked.

"I know," Bella replied, her eyes scanning the crowd. "And I feel bad because I won't get the chance to kiss my Macro."

Sophia rolled her eyes. "Could you stop being dramatic for a while, Bella?"

"Fine. Let's go look for Macro."

They ventured into the party, searching for Bella's crush, Macro. Bella couldn't contain her excitement as they spotted him in the middle of the room.

"That's definitely him," Bella swooned. "I mean, look at his abs. There's no one hotter than him here."

Macro noticed them and made his way over, smoothly taking Bella's hand and planting a kiss on it. "Oh, Bella, so you came," he purred.

"How could I possibly say no to such a hot invitation?" Bella replied, her words dripping with flirtation.

Macro's eyes then shifted to Sophia. "And you must be Sophia. I've heard a lot about you. Bella talks a lot about you. She never told me you were this beautiful." He, too, kissed her hand, leaving Sophia slightly flustered.

"Pleasure meeting you, Macro," Sophia replied, trying to match his charm. "I've heard a lot about you as well."

"Well, I guess somebody had a big mouth," Macro chuckled.

Bella nudged Sophia playfully. "Told you he's hot."

With their masks on and the vibrant party atmosphere surrounding them, Sophia felt a newfound excitement. Tonight held the promise of adventure, and maybe, just maybe, something unexpected would happen that would bring her closer to understanding her mother and herself.
