Tomorrow October 2, 2019
I pull my legs to my chest, resting my chin on my knees. I glance to my right. Through blurry vision, I see Evan on a chair leaning forward. Her elbows are on her knees and her hands are clasped together. Her right leg jiggles up and down as she furrowed her eyebrows.
We haven't said a word to each other since last night. Oh God, last night...
I knew something weird was coming. Everything was perfect yet so wrong. I was happy. At least I thought I was. I had my two friends, but one of them was just so...unstable. I know Aliyah goes Outside and I have no idea what she's seen, but she made friends with horrible people. I mean, Evan always says that Iris and Eddie are bad people. Evan wouldn't lie, right? Maybe this is for the best. Perhaps...I have to let go of Aliyah. But what if this isn't right? Fuck, why didn't I stand up for her? Me and Evan are still alive because of her. She doesn't need me, I need he-
"What are you thinking about?" I hear Evan whisper. My breath catches in my throat and I realize streams of tears have been flowing down my face. I raise my head and jolt backwards. I didn't even realize she had gotten up from her seat! Evan looms over me, her bright yellow eye staring directly into my soul. "You were crying. Why are you crying?" She asks, kneeling down.
I quickly swipe my hands all over my face, trying to wipe away my tears and snot. "I-I'm fine," I answer. "Nothing important."
Evan stares at me for a few seconds, then smiles. I think it's supposed to be a reassuring smile, but it feels uncomfortable. She kneels down to my level and places a hand on my knee. "Listen Tomorrow, it's just you and me now," Evan starts. "We have to be honest with each other. I can't help if you don't tell me what's wrong."
I look at her for a few seconds. How can I even put it into words? "I...I can't..." I trail off. I cover my face with my hands, ashamed of myself.
Evan places her hand on my shoulder. "I know you're thinking about Aliyah." My eyes widen at the mention of her name.
I remove my hands from my face. "I can't help but feel bad, Evan. I did, I do, care about Aliyah. But...what if she was right? About humans I mean. What if all of them aren't so bad?"
It feels as if time has frozen. Evan stares at me with her one bright yellow eye. I look at a nearby cracked mirror to see if my eyes are a dark blue. Nope, my powers aren't activated. I look back at her. Her mouth is slightly curved down into a frown. "You don't really think that do you?" She asks me in a low voice.
I tense up. "I-I do."
Evan's frown disappears. A small smile takes over her face. "Tomorrow, look what humans have done to us," she points to the left side of her face. Her corrupted side. "Look what they've made me! I've been called a monster, a freak, a mistake! I can't imagine what you've been through. Remember that time Aliyah almost fought you?" This catches me by surprise. Of course I remember, but Evan wasn't there. She was with Thomas. "November told me what happened later on that day," Evan tells me, calming me down. "Aliyah was mad at you for not using your powers to help us escape. She was mad, furious at you. She just kept talking to you for her own personal gain," Evan stretches out her arms. "And look where that has brought us!"
I feel like my mind is about to explode. I shake my head. "No...no, Aliyah wouldn't do that! She's a good person, I know she's a good person-"
"If she's a good person, then why did she leave us?" Evan counters.
Tears spring back into my eyes. "Stop it! You're lying!" I yell. I don't mean to, but I can't hold back.
Suddenly, I feel arms being wrapped around me. Evan pulls me to her chest, resting her chin on my head. "You're not thinking straight. Let's go rest, yeah? We can worry about this later." Evan whispers.
I slowly nod. "Okay..."
Evan helps me to my feet, pulling away. She walks me to my sleeping bag and helps cover me with stained blankets. Before my eyes shut, I can barely make out a smile on Evan's face. But it's the same kind she had on earlier. Maybe even more sinister
