Train bridge

" He'd said he was on his way home. He had said he was at train bridge and I remember hearing the sound of a railway. That's all I know."
" Train bridge." Yvonne repeated. She had gone through the bridge on her way here. It was a bridge above a railway.

     " Can you find him?"
" I'll just try my best."
" I hope those crooks haven't done anything to him."
" What deal had he struck with the CIA?"
" I don't just know. Sometimes, messengers from the CIA came and they would discuss. He would look petrified after such meetings. It was after then they paid him another sum and we moved here. He never told me anything..."
She wanted to tear up again.
" If I'd asked, he'd tell me to mind my business..."
Yvonne held her hand and patted her. " Don't cry. I'll find him. I promise."
        " Curse Luke Marlow!"
        " You know him?"
" He's the one! The one behind the messengers and the money! He's the mastermind!"
Could he also be the one behind her dad's death? He's gotta be the one. Herman had said her dad was an excellent hacker and got in the good books of Marlow. Then he went on a trip with Marlow. She could remember, when her dad had come back from that trip, he looked petrified and worried. She'd wondered why but she was little and didn't reason it. Few days after he'd returned, he'd died. Now she thought of it, she wondered what could have transpired during the trip. Why had her dad seemed so worried? He hadn't told her or her mom... She didn't have a mom. She and Anna never really experienced a mother's love. She was just three and Anna had been born, when their mom died.
" I'll try my best." She reassured the lady. There was more to the mystery she gat unravel.
She was certain now, Luke Marlow was the mastermind! She wouldn't spare him.
She left woodland and made to travel back to the city. Just when she was passing through train bridge, she alighted the taxi. Not many people went through the bridge. It was sort of deserted and old. The railway below it made just a few people visit. It wasn't a long bridge and could be trekked on.
She was here but what would she do? She only knew it was the last place his wife rang him before his disappearance. She decided to ring him again. She rang and still, no response.
    She paused.
She heard something! Something beep beep... Something ringing... A phone was ringing!
She searched with her eyes and found a phone lying on the ground. She picked it up and starred at it. There were missed calls on the screen and the number was hers. It meant the phone was Adam's.
Its screen was broken and shattered as it had fallen terribly. She searched again for anything and then found a shoe. It was a male's shoe, alright. But only a shoe. There wasn't a pair.
     What really transpired here?
She placed the phone and the shoe back on the ground from where she had picked them up from. Then she stepped backwards to view the stuffs.
" He was talking but suddenly gasped and said he would call back later and just cut the call. I think he saw something." She remembered Mrs Smith tell her.
She starred at the shoe then at the phone. What had he seen? For a shoe and phone to be left behind, and the phone too was terribly broken, could there had been a fight? Or a perhaps a struggle?
She pictured in her mind, Adam seeing Marlow's men then tried to run. They grabbed him and he had just spoken to his wife, so his phone was still in his hand. He struggled with them and ended up dropping the phone. They grabbed him, probably in the arm and leg. He struggled and kicked against air to free himself but couldn't and ended up dropping one leg of his shoe. The men outnumbered him and jerked him away.
        She stopped imagining.
Could she be right? Was it what had happened? It could be! It should be! If not, what better explanation could there be?
          She thought again.
Adam's location was on and after they found his article, tracked him and found him on train bridge.
             Perfect!
She knew at least what had happened to him. But where could they have kept him?
She remembered Marlow leaving the CIA the other day. Could he have gone to meet the hostage Adam?.
But where could they have kept him?
She didn't have time. She needed to find Adam before they harmed him. She thought hard. They would have taken him to a place noone would suspect. A place less suspicious and guarded by Marlow's men.
          Marlow's house!
But why would Marlow keep him at his place? Unless they kept him In a separate apartment like an underground basement perhaps? Her dad too had had an underground basement.
           She sighed.
She was guessing off point now. Why would Marlow take a hostage home? Probably he even had a warehouse where he kept hostages. She'd run outta ideas.
She walked down the bridge but she didn't sight any taxis. She walked for a while.
The sun has started setting. It had really been a tiresome day. She peeped her wrist watch and it told; 4:57pm. If it dusked and she still had no clue about Adam, it would be terrible and Anna's death anniversary was tomorrow. She hat attend. She looked down the road and spotted a black saloon car, approaching from the opposite direction. She hailed it but it didn't stop. It was heading towards train bridge. The car was tinted. It looked like a private car and she wondered why such a dope car was heading for train bridge.
She trekked a while before she met the expressway and booked a cab home. There was nothing more she could do other than go home, right?
Home, she collapsed on the couch . It was already twilight when she got home. She decided to rest and continue the search immediately after after visiting Anna. She showered and laid on her bed, starring vacantly at the ceiling then her phone rang.
           It was Jerry.
She contemplated whether to pickup or not. She was too tired to listen to Jerry's taunts but she hadn't called after their departure, so she picked.
            " Hey sis!"
         " What?" She replied sternly.
        " Where are you?"
           " Home. What is it?"
      " Tune in the news."
         "Why?"
      " Just do it!"
      " I hate the news!"
" You know that Adam guy?"
       She sat up wide-eyed.
        " What about him?"
" Tune in to the news."
            " Hold on."
She rushed at the TV and powered it on. Tuned the news channel and watched wide eyed;
Body of man, identified to be one Mr Adam Smith, found on the ground of train bridge...
The headline said. She froze on her spot. She watched as an ambulance pulled the body onto a stretcher and drove away. She clasped her hand against her mouth.
She was too late! They'd already killed him.
           " Yvonne?" Jerry called.
Hot streams of tears rolled down her eyes. She didn't want Jerry to hear her sob so she cleared her throat.
" Jerry, I'll call later. Tell Mr Herman I said hi." She cut the call and let the tears fall. She wasn't crying because the man who probably knew about her dad was dead, she was crying because she'd promised Mrs Smith to find her husband.
She'd found him alright, but she wasn't expecting him to be dead!
She cried profusely.

      Those poor kids!

So that ten year old would end up like her; losing her dad at ten. She hung her head and cried. She felt she had failed the ten year old the most. What would she tell Mrs Smith and the kids? She fell back on her bed feeling so exhausted and downcast. What would she tell his wife? Was all she could think of . The lady had even knelt before her and she'd promised to bring her husband.
        The tears fell more.
She couldn't muster up courage to face the woman again. She wanted to blame herself. If only she had... If only she'd done what? It wasn't her fault! It was noone's. It had happened right under their noses. She'd tried her best! She really had. She wiped her face.
         But train bridge?
She'd been there that afternoon. How come Adam's body had been found there? She hadn't encountered it while there.
    The car!
That saloon car with the tinted windows! It wasn't a cab but a private car. Could it have... Could it have been carrying Adam's body and then dumped it at train bridge?
But it could have been anyone's car! She sighed. His body had been found with a hole in his chest. A pistol was also found beside him. Results from the forensic center said there was no fingerprint on the gun. It looked like he'd been shot somewhere else and was transported to that spot.
They had killed him and dumped the at train bridge. There wasn't even blood stain on the ground. The footages around that area had all been erased and there was no knowing who had dumped the body.
    How cruel Marlow could be!
It had to be him! She kept thinking and her head was aching. She was restless. She was tired but the stress had drained her of sleep. She had to gulp down a cup of milkshake.
