Yvonne drove to work.
She was strolling through the first floor which happened to contain Marlow's office. Her alibi was the storage room which was at the far end of the corridor.
She could see his door, coffee brown in color, large too, just a few inches away from her. His office, she thought, would contain many secrets. He would probably have a safe where he kept his journals, and surely they would have lots of secrets. If she could just get in and make a clean search. He must also have a secret safe.
She heard footsteps and turned, Marlow with this huge guy that was almost bald, approaching.
" Oh Yvonne!" Marlow called and that smile she hated appeared on his lips.
" Good day, sir." She greeted.
" You're up here?"
" I wanted to get something from the storage room." Her gaze didn't leave the huge guy. He looked too muscular and thug like and she wondered what Marlow would be doing with a guy like him.
" Okay, then." Marlow said still smiling stupidly. Bosco nudged Marlow and said he was going down to the car. Then he left after glancing at Yvonne.
" I'll head to the storage room." She walked down the corridor. Marlow had just entered his office. She realized the only way to access his office and the truth, was to get closer to him, for him to lure her into his devious plan. Once she had him, she would use every opportunity to find out the truth. She reached the storage room and just took the steps heading downstairs. She headed to the fourth floor to go grab lunch. She took the table by the window. She was about crunching when she peeped downstairs.
Marlow just stepped out from the building and strolled to stand beside Bosco. A black saloon car pulled up in front of them.
The car was unmistakenly familiar. The tinted windows, the teeth edged wheels and the silver cross on each door handle.
Train bridge!!
It was the same car that had gone the opposite direction, headed towards train bridge. She had thought it was unusual for people to take that route. Thinking it over, Adam's body had been discovered later, the car certainly was Marlow's.
Marlow was the murderer indeed!!
He must've killed the poor man and had the bald guy drive the body over to train bridge.
She gritted.
She knew so much but she couldn't even do anything. She had no evidence to prove Marlow was the murderer. It worried her that the man's body had sped past her in the car. Maybe if she had stopped the car or something... But really there was nothing she could have done even if she had found the body in the car." She looks familiar." Bosco said as they entered the car.
" Who?" Marlow asked.
" That girl. What was her name? Um... Yvonne!"
" Really? Where did you see her?"
" I think it was around train bridge."
" Train bridge?"
" When I had gone to dispose Adam's body, I remember seeing her by the road side. She was tryna flag a cab.
" You sure?"
" Quite sure. She's one pretty lad."
His last statement was mischievous and they both laughed.
" I know, right? She's the new target. She's good with the keyboard. She'll come in handy in L.A"
" You think she'll cooperate?"
" She has to. Some others cooperated well except that Arnold whatever. His honesty was bad for him." His thoughts drifted back in time. " He had said he would rather die than commit such treason."
He laughed.
" Stupid fellow. All he had to do was just hack and get going but no, and indeed he died. That herman wanted to reveal us and you know, we, you,got rid of him. I suppose his kids are dead by now."
They laughed.
" When is the next trip to L.A?"
" Quite soon. She'll be needed by then. If she cooperates, good! But if not, she dies like Matthew Arnold."
" Two weeks, sir." Harry called from the front passenger seat. " Two weeks before the trip to Los Angeles."
Two weeks it is.Her phone rang.
The caller was unknown and she doubted whether to answer or not.
When she did;
" Yvonne! Yvonne? Hello?"
" Yeah! Who's this?" The caller sounded panicked and seemed to be sobbing.
" It's Leila's mum. Adam's wife!"
She sat up quickly.
" Hello ma'am. You okay? What's wrong?"
" They're here! They're after us!"
She didn't need to know whom.
" How did they find you? Are they in the neighborhood? Where are you? The kids?"
The lady sobbed.
" They attacked our home but we managed to escape. We're outta the country side. I don't know where we are. Am scared. Leila's crying! They haven't had lunch... Please help us."
" I'm on my way!" She hung up and scurried into casuals. Didn't care how she looked even. She drove out and headed towards train bridge. It was the only vehicle ridable route to the country side. Maybe she would find them there.
She drove at utmost speed. She had even almost drove into a bus but she didn't care. If not for the woman, then for the kids, for poor Leila.
She drove through and fro train bridge but still no sign of them. She drove to the expressway but still didn't sight them. She dialed the number that had called her but it was switched of.
She panicked.
Had they had them? Marlow's men? No! Never!
They might have had their way with Adam but not with his wife and kids. She drove down the road keeping an eye out for them but still, nothing.
She was losing hope. Maybe they had them after all.
She stepped out from her car and began asking around for them. Those she asked declined seeing them. Her heart was tearing apart. This couldn't be the end of the smith's. Her eyes were getting watery. Was she late again?
She got back into her car, still searching around for them. She drove round and round. She was jittery and almost in tears. They couldn't end like this.
She came to a forceful halt as she sighted them but they were being pulled away by Marlow's men.
Not again!
She increased her speed and took after their van as it sped along the highway. There were five of them and they looked armed, but she just ought to take up in them. She drove after them and overtook them, blocking their path. The van braked abruptly and the look on the driver's face showed he was irritated. He stepped out from the van, holding a pistol. But when she stepped out, he smirked and eyed the beauty in front of him. Three others stepped out too and they circled her, smiling mischievously.
" Hello angel" The driver said.
" Stopped to see us huh?" Another said. They were yearning closer and it irked her. She pulled out two pistols from her inner pocket and shoved it in their faces.
" Another step and I fire." She yelled.
They laughed.
" Put your gun down angel and just hop in," He pulled her by the waist but she wagged him off and fired at his leg.
" I Said no step!"
The shot took the others by surprise and they gritted. Their man had been shot in the leg by a lady. He groaned and fell to the floor.
" Mad huh?" Another yelled and made for but she shot him and unfortunately, he missed, eyes wide at the narrowly escaped death. One took her from the back but she hit hum in the face and he groaned. The driver, angered, pointed his pistol at her and fired. But she was quick and hugged his man. His blood splashed in her face and she wiped it off. They were annoyed and one made for her and she kicked him in the face. The driver lashed his pistol and dashed at her, grabbed one pistol and locked her by the arm and they took advantage of it. They lashed the other pistol away from her.
Finally they had her!
" You turned out tough, darling." One said.
" Lemmie guess, you came to save them, who'll save you now?"
The driver tossed her to the other two. The one with the shot leg managed to grab one oof her arm and another grabbed her other arm. They were down by one. The fifth one was in the van with the hostages.
The driver was the boss and he was quite pissed off. He slapped her across the face severally. She growled and spat blood. Her lip was wounded.
" C'mon go save 'em now, huh?" He said sarcastic and they laughed. " You're pretty, you know?"
" I wonder how you taste."
She was damn angry but helpless too.
" Boss said to get rid of any obstacle. Well get rid of this angel when I've got a taste if her." He put a strand behind her ear and traced her lips with his finger.
" Arrrgh!"
She kicked him in between the pants and he growled. She tried to break free from the other two but they gripped her hard. She had to kick the one with the gunshot wound and he let go to tend to his wound. The other one tried to punch her but she held his fist and kicked his tummy and he fell.
She was free! But as she turned, she met a pistol. The driver had a pistol to her.
" Bye bye"
He fired, a gun fired. She was too shocked to make a move. She opened her eyes to find herself bleeding and hurt...but she wasn't. The guy had rather been fired at. The shooter came to view as the body slumped to the ground.
Knight?
Kick, kick, punch, punch,throw, kick
She just stood agape, watching as he handled the two men. The other one with the wound was easily beaten and fell to the ground.
Then Knight shot the other one dead.
His ash black hair was a little ruffled but he looked cool. How had he found her?
They stood watching each other. Her face was sore and she had a bleeding lip. He took short strides to stand in front of her. Why did she always feel intimidated and awkward around him? Right now, was it because he had threatened to shoot her the next time they met, but he was the one that just saved her from a gun shot.
She looked away.
" How'd...how'd you find me?"
He didn't reply. He just watched her.
" Steve." He blurted.
" Steve?"
" He saw you chase after them. We were around the corner." Why was he talking to her?, He thought. He hated her!
They heard a gun being set and when they looked towards the van, it was the fifth guy and he aimed at Knight. And almost abruptly, Yvonne hugged Knight and the man fired. Knight freaked.
Yvonne!
But the shooter dropped dead revealing Leila holding a gun. Yvonne opened her eyes when she didn't feel the bullet pierce her. She had her arms wrapped around his back and their eyes locked. For a millisecond, she saw the fear in his eyes but it was gone instantly. His eyes left hers and roamed her face. Her lips, they were wounded but looked nice?
This shouldn't be happening! He pulled away, leaving her feeling dejected. Leila's sobbing brought them back to reality.
Yvonne ran to them. The rest of the family stepped out and comforted Leila. Poor Leila, Yvonne thought. The girl wasn't crying because they were almost kidnapped, she was crying because at ten, she held a guns and shot someone. She was going through tension, shock and probably trauma. Yvonne held her tight and hugged her, patting her back.
" Don't cry. It's over."
" I...I...he's dead! I shot him!" Leila stammered.
" I know. You did the right thing."
She looked up to Mrs Smith, carrying the three-year old who muttered a 'thank you'. She glanced back at Knight. He stood his spot with tucked hands. She just his car parked behind the van. He must've pulled over without them noticing. He turned to leave.
She called after him and ran to him but halted in her tracks after his; " Don't thank me. Maybe I shouldn't have come." He made to leave but she grabbed his arm.
" Thank you. I don't care what you think. You just saved my life. Am really thankful."
Still stubborn old her.
He flung her hand off and strolled to his car. One last glance at the red haired girl made his heart ache for her. He wanted to envelope her in a hug. He actually did miss her.
She starred at him too wondering when his socalled hatred would disappear. She knew he still loved her if not he wouldn't have saved her. Maybe if she tried harder she would have the love of her life back.
Maybe.
He ignited the engine and made a screeching reverse and without another look, drove away. His absence brought her back to reality. She couldn't let the smith's go back to their home. They had nowhere to go to. And she had that to think of.
Herman and Jerry were still abroad. Maybe they could stay at their place? They could stay anywhere but certainly not woodland.
