It's been a week since your conversation with Harrison.

More than anything you want to show him that you're trying. He was giving his all to ensure that you were comfortable and happy. So the least you can do is help in any way you can. So you go about your day, assisting in the lab. You have experience in ways that the interns can only dream of, but you try to stay at the sidelines. Only giving input when instructed.

Going into a leadership role brings too many somber feelings. You have a feeling that's why Harrison assigned you an intern position.

The clattering of a beaker on the floor makes your head turn.

"You need to be careful! Stop messing up, rookie!" Another intern yells.

"I'm sorry!" She's quick to apologize.

You move over to her, helping her pick up the broken glass. She looks up, sending you an appreciative smile.

"Thank you." She whispers. You nod.

"No problem." Your eyes turn back to the male who'd reprimanded her. As you toss the pieces into the trash, you move over to him.

"We're all in a learning environment. There's no need to be rude." He scoffs.

"Please, like you're in a position to talk. All of us got here through hard work. Nepotism must be a great boost to your confidence."

His jaw is set tight, and the other interns in the background look uneasy. It's clear to see this guy has a hot head. So why not indulge him.

"You're right. It does. I wonder if you know this but my uncle is best friends with Dr. Harrison Wells. He was really insistent on making me feel welcomed. But I can't say that I do. I guess I'll have to tell my uncle about it. I'm sure he wouldn't mind making some adjustments."

He suddenly doesn't look as confident. He backs off, walking away. The woman you'd help looks surprised.

"Your uncle is best friends with the founder of Star Labs?!"

You shake your head.

"Nope, I was just pulling his leg. It worked too." You can see the little smile that makes its way on her face.

"You're funny."

You smile, holding out your hand.

"(Y/N), nice to meet you."

She takes it with the widest grin.

"Avery! Nice to meet you too. Thanks again for the save. "

"No problem, I had to put him in his place. I thought being the oldest here would give me an advantage but I guess not." You had maybe a five year gap on most of them.

"I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but you seem a lot more experienced to be on this internship." The second she says it she starts apologizing.

"N-Not that y-you're old or anything! You're as young as a stallion. I-i just mean that this is a beginner program for scientists. N-Not that you're stupid that's not what I meant!!"

You laugh rather loudly and it feels great. You can see the way she winces. When you finally calm down, you place your hand on her shoulder.

"Thank you, really. You have no idea how long it's been."

This is easily the best conversation you've had outside of your talks with Harrison.

"I'm a mess." She giggles.

"What I meant is you seem very intelligent. I saw the way you assembled that molecular splicer. It took most of us at least two tries. But you got it done the first try. "

You suppose it was hard to hide the scientist at heart.

"I just don't like the attention. I learn more when I'm observing rather than trying to prove I'm the smartest in the room."

"That's pretty awesome. Do you want to join me for lunch? I know this sweet spot that we can get extra chips from."

"I.."

You pause.

It feels wrong to accept the invitation. To be this happy.

"I'm sorry! I'm being forceful again aren't I. You don't have to! I understand. I can be a bit pushy." You shake your head.

"You aren't pushy. It's really sweet. How about I join you tomorrow. I'm not much for crowds. I know this great spot on the second floor where we can eat quietly. "

"That's perfect! I'll see you tomorrow then!" She looks very excited and you wave as she runs off to get her lunch.

"Tomorrow." You mumble.
