Lady Robin

I ran through the forest that tried to envelop my body. I panted as I heard the hoof beats pounding in my ears. My cape snagged on a tree branch. I yanked at it, and it tore off a piece of my cape.

I ducked into my cave and listened intently but all I could hear was my rapid breathing. The ivy curtain of the cave hung loose yet so close together light had a tough time penetrating it. It seemed to be just a wall of ivy nothing more inside.

I tried to hold my breath for a second just to listen.

The hoof beats pounded above my head. Neighing was heard but nothing else for a moment; then they left, and I let out all the air I had been holding in.

I sunk to the floor of the cave thankful for my refuge on the side of the mountain. The forest was big but the mountain was much bigger. They would never find me unless I gave myself away.

I pulled the cape from my head and let my blonde hair flow down my shoulders.

As I walked deeper into the cave the sounds of my merry women became louder.

"Where have you been?" Serina asked. She came over and offered me a hug. Her blue curly hair whipped me in the face as she did.

I spat out the curls.

She laughed "Sorry."

"It's all right." I said as I made my way to the circle of women around the glowing fire.

The cave looked like a home decorated to perfection with things from outdoors adorning it. The cave was luminescent with a warm yellow light. To anyone who might come into the cave it looked to be coming from the fire but in reality, the fire wasn't real but magic made by the women sitting around it.

Witches who had been kicked out of the villages because of people's fears. They all had different colors of hair blue, red, green, and purple. My blonde hair stuck out like a sore thumb.

I was the reason they were all still alive. Since I was a lady of stature, I had the power to make them disappear without notice sadly once the people caught on, I was banished as well.

The only thing that protected me was my trusty bow that my father had proudly let me learn to use since he lacked a son to teach. They had magic of all kinds and shapes, water, fire, wind, and earth powers. Their hair colors usually correlated to their powers, blue-water, red-fire, wind-purple, and green-earth, but every once in a while, they wouldn't and those were the rarest of all, sadly none in this group were one of those.

I sat on tree trunk that had been cut in half. Serina came over and handed me a water. The witches all stopped talking to hear my report.

I took a gulp of water and then spoke.

"Today the guards got way to close to the entrance of the cave but the information I have obtained should make everyone feel a bit better." I paused for dramatic effect. "There has been a development. A new king has been pronounced for Avon. He is said to have been a mere common village boy and was elected king because of his leadership like skills. This king is having a ball and is inviting every eligible noble woman to it so he can decide among them who shall be his queen. I am going to go and if I can get him interested in me then I will be Queen of Avon and with that I can protect you and take care of you."

I waited for someone to say something, to move, to even take a breather, but they all stared at me. Wasn't my speech empowering? Why weren't they excited?

Serina was the first to speak "That is exciting news but..." She paused and then looked into my eyes. They must have resembled an innocent fawn because she changed her tune. "But...I want to go with you just to make sure everything is fine, and that king doesn't get any ideas."
