Surprisingly, the curse did not come back until the third day. When Sukuna finally stepped inside the dimly-lit hallways of the safehouse, he immediately sensed something was off. There was almost little to no traces of cursed energy left in the building, at least not much from the Six-Eyes user. The curse set down the bowl of ramen Uraume had prepared for the sorcerer on the nearest table and left, going to look for the nuisance residing in his home.
Each and every door was flung open as the curse stalked through the house, almost ripping them apart as his heartbeat grew louder. He swore if the sorcerer stepped foot outside the curtain, he would go back to that damned school and finish the job. After that, Sukuna would bring the head of Yuta Okkotsu to punish Gojo's disobedience. As his thoughts got progressively more violent, Sukuna finally reached the last room in the minka. His hand hesitated to reach the handle, but a noise from inside got the curse's attention.
The door was practically ripped off its hinges, revealing a pitch dark room with no sorcerer in sight. Sukuna seethed in anger, but just as he was about to leave, a weak voice stopped him in his tracks.
"Look who's back."
Sukuna turned around, eyes finally landing on the sorcerer in the corner, laying in a pool of crimson. In his fit of rage, he had missed the coppery smell that had engulfed the room. Gojo looked pale, one hand tightly clutched onto his abdomen.
For some unknown reason, Sukuna felt extremely agitated. How dare he call himself the strongest when Mahoraga defeated him in mere seconds? How dare he get Sukuna's hopes up when the sorcerer couldn't even heal properly? Sukuna clearly remembered telling the fool to rest up, but of course that impulsive idiot opened the wound again.
"You're really bad at this healing stuff y'know?" Gojo muttered, failing miserably at steadying his voice.
Sukuna scoffed. "And here I thought you claimed to be the strongest."
His comment seemed to have hit a nerve, as Gojo's eyes narrowed. "I'm doing this for my students, Sukuna. That's why I'm gonna kill you someday."
However, Sukuna wasn't listening in the slightest.
The curse wasn't surprised at the state of Gojo's wound, as he had suspected that something like this would happen all along. Mahoraga's attack was something that mortals couldn't just walk away from, no matter how strong they were. No matter how much Sukuna lied to himself, the sorcerer wasn't and won't ever be the same as him. Judging from how slowly Gojo had been healing, the only thing keeping him alive was the sheer determination and will to live on. But for what?
Sukuna had to restrain himself from physically hurting Gojo, to just beat some sense back into him. The jujutsu sorcerers didn't care about the Six-Eyes user like he did. They were just scared of the power, but Sukuna loved it. Wanted it. He was obsessed with it. So why did Gojo still want to protect those weaklings? He couldn't understand why the other would fight for love, when it would just drag them down. Being the strongest meant giving up on useless things like that, and Sukuna sacrificed everything for his ambitions.
It was so delusional of the sorcerer to even think about living a normal life.
As his anger slowly converted into pity, Sukuna took one last look before turning away again.
"If you really want to save those students of yours, then show me Six-Eyes. Show me you want to live."
Gojo said nothing as the curse shut the door behind him, leaving the sorcerer alone once again.
...
What was Gojo fighting for?
The question was engraved in Gojo's mind, a seed of doubt that Geto had left behind for his best friend as a parting gift. As he sat in the darkness, bleeding out to death, he couldn't help but wonder.
Fall had passed in an instant, and winter came in its place. Gojo peers out the window of his dorm to look. He doesn't know what he's looking for, or why. The phone in his hand lets out a crack, and only then does Gojo realize he's broken it. Tears are now starting to pool from the corner of his eyes, but he stifles the sobs racking though his body. Snow covers the landscape, and Gojo can't see far beyond the school gates shutting him in. It looks like a prison. Maybe it is.
There is nothing in the world he wants more than to go and find Suguru, but he knows he can't. He made his choice that day, and so did Gojo.
"I've decided how I'll live my life."
Gojo flinches, as if the words that came from Suguru's mouth that day could actually cut him. The memory is still fresh, yet so blurry. He tries to picture Suguru's face again, but there's nothing. Only emptiness.
"I've decided how I'll live-"
How dare Suguru abandon him. He would never understand the pain Gojo feels everyday. Never know how far apart Gojo is from the rest of their friends. The void that drives him apart from the rest of the crowd can only get bigger as Gojo grows stronger. He may act like an idiot, but he isn't dumb. People have always looked at him differently, but it's been getting worse lately. They were all afraid of him.
"I've decided-"
Maybe Suguru got sick of him. Yeah. Maybe it was Gojo's fault. He's too clingy, too energetic, doesn't know how to read the room, he's-
He's probably suffocating to be around.
That's why Suguru abandoned him. Because Gojo killed any happiness left in his best friend.
Gojo clenches his fists until his fingernails draw blood. But he doesn't stop there. The pain only seems to bring him closer to reality, and no matter how much he swims against the tide, it will consume him one day. He wants to give up.
Going towards the sink, Gojo staggers the first few steps before grabbing onto the edge to steady himself. He exhales, his breath forming a mist due to the cold air. Gojo can't see anymore.
His reflection stares back at him as Gojo glares, as if things could change if he tried hard enough. As if Suguru would come back.
Cold water hits his skin and he barely flinches, rinsing off the red. Picking at the dried blood underneath his fingernails. The blood, it doesn't come off. Gojo curses and slams the tap shut.
