1x7 Pt 1
After the emotionally draining case with the female-diagnosed cancer patients, Dr. Mavis took a few days off to recoup. She had expected the case to be difficult, but it had taken a toll on her more than she anticipated. Now, returning to the hospital after her much-needed break, she found herself pulled into a week-long press conference.
As she walked into the bustling ward, she spotted April and Sarah cooing over a photo on their phones. Their faces were lit up with joy, and their bodies were close together, creating an aura of intimacy.
"Hey, you two." Mavis greeted them, her voice warm and welcoming. Maggie, who had been standing nearby, turned to join them.
"Hey, you're finally back!" the three of them exclaimed in unison.
"Yeah, but let's just go back to the photo," Mavis said with a smile, waving away their concerns. She didn't want to be bombarded with questions about how she was doing.
April giggled as she held up her phone to show Mavis a photo of baby Owen. "Oh, it's Natalie's son, Owen; he's just too adorable," she said, her eyes sparkling with fondness.
Mavis's face lit up as she gasped. "Natalie had her baby? Let me see him!" She leaned eagerly towards April's phone, her lips parted in anticipation.
April handed her phone to Mavis, and she immediately zoomed in on the photo. Baby Owen stared back at her, his big eyes wide and curious. He had a tiny button nose and a perfectly round head, with a tuft of soft, downy hair.
"Aww, he's definitely half Natalie," Mavis said, her voice filled with awe. "He's so cute."
Maggie, who had been standing nearby, peered over her shoulder at the photo. "Look at that," she said, pointing to the baby's long, dark eyelashes. "He got my eyelashes."
"You delivered him," April said with a laugh. "That doesn't give him your DNA."
"You'd be surprised," Maggie said, wiggling her fingers playfully. "The power of these hands."
Mavis smiled at Maggie's antics, but her eyes remained fixed on the photo of baby Owen. She felt a warm feeling in her chest. She was so happy for Natalie and her new son.
"Oh, Mavis, before you walk away," Maggie said, her voice hesitant. "Here. This guy kept calling for you while you were out. He left a few messages and told me to give you his number." She held out a sticky note with a phone number scrawled on it.
Mavis turned and walked over to Maggie. She took the paper from her hand and scanned it quickly. "Did he say his name?" she asked. her voice carefully neutral.
"Yeah," Maggie said. "He said his name was Lucas. Lucas Taylor."
Mavis's smile faded. She handed the paper back to Maggie. "You can just throw that out and delete every message he left," she said.
"Okay," Maggie said, her eyebrows raised in surprise. "But why? He seemed nice."
"He's not," Mavis said curtly. "If he calls again, just tell him you got the wrong hospital."
.........
"Hey, Dr. Rhodes," Mavis greeted him, her voice warm and welcoming.
"Dr. Vega! Glad to see you back. We missed you," he said, his eyes lighting up with genuine pleasure.
"I missed you guys too," she smiled.
"How was the conference?" he asked, coming out of the elevator with a file in his hand.
"Incredible," she said, her voice taking on a teasing tone. "And boring."
He chuckled. "Glad to hear it."
