1x7 Pt 2

Before Mavis could form a response, a storm brewed in his eyes, the whites nearly swallowed by the tempest of his anger. His jaw clenched, the muscles rigid cords beneath his skin, as he took a step forward, the intensity of his fury escalating.

Without uttering a word, he raised his hand. Not for a moment, she took her eyes off him as, on instinct, she raised her hands to keep him from hitting her as she flinched. She was waiting for the impending blow to strike.

The air hung heavy with anticipation until a voice shattered the silence. "Dr. Vega!?" The call sliced through the atmosphere, breaking the connection between Mavis and Lucas. He froze mid-motion, his arm dropping as Mavis turned her head towards the voice, discovering Jay's familiar presence.

"Detective Halstead?" Mavis exclaimed as Jay approached. "What are you doing here?" she inquired, relief evident in her voice.

"I'm here about a patient. Walter Blevins," Jay replied.

"Right then, I can take you to him," Dr. Vega interjected, eager to conclude her interaction with Lucas. Despite the clear tension between them, Jay couldn't ignore the uneasy expression on Mavis's face.

"Is everything alright between you two?" Jay probed, sensing there was more to the situation than Mavis was letting on.

"No, they were great. I was actually just leaving," Lucas retorted with a forced smile, his passive-aggressive tone hanging in the air. Mavis remained silent, watching him walk away.

"You're sure everything's good," Jay inquired, placing a hand on her shoulder. Mavis shrugged off the gesture, forcing a smile. "Everything's fine," she replied, but her eyes betrayed a different story. Jay chose not to press her further.

As they headed back into the hospital, Jay explained, "Valerie tagged along with me."

"She did? Of course she did," Dr. Vega remarked as they entered the waiting room, where Valerie greeted them. "Hey!" she waved.

"Shouldn't you still be recovering right now?" Mavis scolded Valerie.

"I'm not going to do this right now, Mavis. I'm fine," Valerie reassured her. Mavis reluctantly accepted Valerie's response.

Jay asked, "Were you able to talk with Mr. Blevins?"

"No." Valerie shook her head, crossing her arms. "He just started coughing up blood, and Dr. Halstead is treating him right now. We have to wait until his wife gets here."

Mavis excused herself, saying, "I'll see you two when things settle down," and headed back into the ER. As Jay and Valerie waited, Jay's thoughts wandered to Mavis's earlier encounter with the guy outside the hospital, expressing concern about the imminent danger he sensed.

"Hey Val, Is your sister seeing anyone by any chance?" Jay asked.

"Well, I don't have the latest gossip on Mavis' love life, but if she's hiding a secret admirer, I'm not in the loop," Valerie confessed.

Valerie shot Jay a sly look. "Detective Halstead, are you secretly plotting to woo my sister? She's a catch, but what about Erin? I don't think she'll like this." She teased him, playfully nudging him.

Jay rolled his eyes. "Come on, Val, it's not like that," he insisted.

"Oh, really? Then why the sudden interest?" Valerie asked with a playful glint in her eye.
