The sound of my alarm and the sizzling of what I can guess is bacon from the pan in the kitchen are the only things I hear when I wake up. I check the time on my phone and I see that it's 7 am. Meaning I have an hour to eat breakfast and throw something on before I have to get to class.

I'm usually not a morning person and I find anyone who is to be a complete angel. I couldn't imagine waking up at dawn and I dreaded the fact that I was registered in the early morning anatomy class but it's a requirement for my major so I pull my butt out of bed and started getting ready.

it's been a week since I moved to California and started classes the first week of living with my roommates, Halle and Lizzie, had been an intriguing mix of excitement, adjustments, and the gradual blossoming of a beautiful friendship. I appreciated them a lot, especially since they were the first girlfriends I ever had.

As the shy member of our trio- as I was duped by Halle a few days ago-, I often found myself observing and taking in the vibrant dynamics that unfolded between Halle and Lizzie, who were both outgoing and full of energy. I had a lot more in common with Halle who was also of Latin descent. I couldn't tell at first but once I heard her yelling in Spanish from her dorm room it was enough to get the hint. Sometimes Lizzie felt a whole lot left out whenever we spoke to each other in the language but she consoled herself over the fact that she and I both had red hair, albeit hers was a way lighter shade than mine. Their infectious spirits were slowly pulling me out of my shell, and I was beginning to find my place in our little dorm family.

This particular morning isn't different from the others. It's a Wednesday, meaning Lizzie and Halle will be up as well since we three were all coincidentally unlucky enough to pick up three separate morning classes on the same day but at least we had each other to bear it rather than alone. The soft rays of the sun streamed through our dorm room, creating a cozy atmosphere that warmed my heart. I'd been feeling more at ease with Halle and Lizzie, and their bright personalities were helping me to open up.

The scent of sizzling bacon and freshly brewed coffee wafted through the room as Halle gracefully moved around the small kitchen, deftly flipping pancakes on the griddle. Even though we were practically the same age, Halle was a bit more maternal than the rest of us. She always wanted to know how Lizzie and I were feeling and I loved her for it.

Lizzie is slumped by the kitchen counter, I can see the bags forming under her eyes and her sheer reluctance to go to class.

"Morning guys." I greet them with enthusiasm, Lizzie replies with a groan and Hal gives me an amused smile. She is not a morning person.

"Does it not defy the laws of physics for you to look this good every single morning? How do you do it, Mila?"

I blush at her compliment and shrug. I hadn't put that much effort into my outfit this morning. After checking the weather I decided to wear some yoga pants and a short-sleeved squared-neck top and with no time to do my hair, I used some leave-in conditioner and threw it into the best little ponytail I could.
