At the end of next week, I was running a bit late for work. When I passed the front door, Tatiana wasn't there.

CJ: "That's weird. Where is she?"

I decided to just ignore it. As I go towards Mae's office, I hear shouting coming from the autopsy room.

CJ: "People are fighting?"

I was heading there when I heard a woman screaming and Tyler got out of there a second after, almost running. Luckily, he didn't see me. I pushed the doors of the autopsy room and found a scalpel on the ground, covered with blood and a few drops around. There wasn't any sound in the room, nothing that could tell me where the woman I heard was. I had to take a few steps before I could see her, sitting on the floor with her back against the wall, putting pressure on her abdomen.

« CJ : Mae! »

I rushed towards her and got on my knees next to her. I should've known it was her the second I saw Tyler.

« CJ : What happened?
Mae : CJ...
CJ : Okay, hold on, let me help you. »

I get up and go get some stuff to clean and bandage the wound. I got back with the necessary things and scissors. It looked like Mae was nervous so I tried to make her laugh.

« CJ : I hope it wasn't your favorite t-shirt.
Mae : No, it wasn't. »

I smiled at her and started cutting into her shirt to access the wound. It was a deep cut, maybe 4 inches long. My old french self spoke at this right moment.

CJ: "10 centimeters. That's funny, I still got that habit."

She was covered in her own blood. As I worked on her wound, I could see she was uncomfortable being touched. I tried to understand what had happened between her and Tyler.

« CJ : I know Tyler hates you but this is something else.
Mae : He has his own way to deal with things.
CJ : So, it happened before? »

Mae looked away like she was trying to avoid the question. To me, it was clearly a "yes" and I couldn't help but think of how I could make him pay what he did to her.

The more I was seeing the cut, the more I was thinking...

« CJ : I think you're gonna need stitches.
Mae : Can you do it? »

I looked up to her to make sure she wasn't serious but she was. Of course I could do it but I wasn't sure if she could handle the pain.

« CJ : Uhh...
Mae : Yes or no?
CJ : Yes, but are you sure you wanna do it here?
Mae : I am NOT going to the hospital.
CJ : Okay. ... Okay, you're the boss. »

I took what I needed and started stitching her up. As soon as I started, Mae started biting on her palm. She was definitely feeling a lot of pain. When I was finishing the knot on the thread, I looked up to her. Mae had probably passed out from the pain and was now unconscious.

CJ: "Okay... Now, what?"

That was the weirdest situation I had ever been in and I have been in weird situations. I didn't know what to do but I couldn't leave her here like that. So, I bandaged the wound to cover it and I grabbed Mae under the arms to drag her to her office. I had never been this happy that her office had a door leading directly to the autopsy room. I was able to put her on the sofa then I took some time to sit and think.

As I sat there, I couldn't help but look at her and I realized I was scared? I was scared for her. She was still unconscious on the sofa, her breathing steady but shallow. I checked her pulse and it seemed stable, but I wasn't a doctor. I needed to figure out what to do next. Her t-shirt was still covered in blood and with the cut I made in it, anyone who would step in here would realize what happened. I didn't wanted someone else to see her like that so I made a decision.

I knew that Mae kept clean clothes in her office so I took the scissors and cut all the way through her t-shirt to make it easier to remove it. As I opened it, my eyes landed on a scar she had just above her breast.

CJ: "Did Tyler do this, too?"

I felt really invasive and uncomfortable. I just ignored my feelings and finished what I had started. I took a clean black t-shirt and put it on her, taking my time to make sure I wouldn't hurt her. I gently laid her down on the sofa and even though I didn't knew Mae for a long time, I had a feeling she would keep a blanket around, just in case.

CJ: "Found it!"

I had just found a light grey blanket so I took it and I covered Mae with it. I sat at her desk for probably ten minutes before the phone started ringing. Obviously, she didn't move a bit, she was still unconscious. I picked up the phone and I couldn't find anything to say.

« CJ : Hello?
A man : Hi. Is this Doctor Merton's office?
CJ : Um, yes, I mean, I'm Doctor Jarvis' assistant. She's... busy, at the moment. »

The man on the phone was telling me he had two bodies coming for us, a couple, man and woman, who had been in a car accident together. Good news is I was gonna get busy, bad news is I wasn't really allowed to do an autopsy myself, especially without a supervisor. I had seen Mae do it but even with that I didn't have any medical knowledge. Other bad news is Mae wasn't about to wake up and these autopsies needed to be done today. Maybe, I should've refused when he asked me if he could bring them here but I didn't.

An hour later, the bodies were both on the autopsy tables and I was changed into black scrubs. I was standing in between the two tables looking at them.

CJ: "What do I do? Should I do it alone?"

I was pretty sure that Mae wasn't gonna like that and at that precise moment I heard her weak voice.

« Mae : What are you doing? »

I turned around to see Mae awake and standing, keeping her balance by leaning against the door frame.

« CJ : Hey. Are you okay?
Mae : You didn't answer my question.
CJ : Neither did you. »

Mae paused and looked at the floor before answering.

« Mae : It hurts but I'm okay. »

I nodded, without realizing I clearly looked concerned.

« Mae : Now, you tell me what's going on, here?
CJ : Uh, they were in a car accident, he was driving and apparently he provoked it. She was in the passenger seat. Husband and wife, 77 and 72 years old. No medical records for him but she has been transplanted with a new heart, two months ago.
Mae : You already got their medical records? You weren't gonna start without me, were you?
CJ : No, I was just... getting information. »

Two questions crossed my mind at this right time. Why couldn't I lie to her even though I lied my whole life and how could she read me like an open book? Actually, three questions. Did she had a criminal background too?
