It's surreal to think of the way that one's life can change in a split second. How they can know exactly how the rest of their life will look like and suddenly have those notions ripped from their arms. How their life can be so perfect one moment and completely destroyed the next.

Not many are victims of this harsh reality, but when reality strikes, it strikes hard.

On a Friday evening like any other, it struck Liana Langford. An innocent four year old girl, seized by the cruelties of this universe.

Every house in London must have looked the same on this particular night. Packed full of the entire family, eager to get away from the storm which angrily pelted against windows.

The Langford household looked almost the same, bar the fact that neither Thomas or Jane Langford had returned home that evening. This left the Langford boys, nervously pacing around the house, waiting on their parents arrival - which wouldn't come until later in the evening.

Unable to get ahold of his parents, Lee took the responsibility of looking after his younger siblings. This included putting on a facade, so as not to worry Liana - who was still completely oblivious to the fact that her parents hadn't returned home yet.

Due to Lee's lack of culinary skill, all he was able to cook was a frozen oven pizza. Luckily, this didn't seem to bother the kids, who were perfectly content with an unhealthy meal.

Halfway through their meal, a thought popped into young Liana's head. A thought which could have disrupted the peace had Lee not been quick to respond.

"Where are Mummy and Daddy?" The question so innocent yet so full of meaning. Little did she know the chaos that could ensue from such a simple question.

A million thoughts circled through the three brothers minds:

Should we tell her the truth? Tell her that we have no clue where our parents are tonight.

Or lie for the sake of her sanity?

It wasn't a difficult decision to make on such short notice. No good could ever come out of a four year old girl discovering that her parents may never return home again.

"They've just run into a teeny problem at work" Lee told her, the lie having rolled off his tongue so smoothly he could almost convince himself it was the truth. "They'll be home soon"

The answer seemed to have satisfied the girl, as only a moment later, she returned to her meal and began to babble about god knows what.
