"What's with her?" I heard a quiet whisper spoken towards me.

"She hates Sarah, they used to be inseparable, but when she didn't invite Kie to her birthday party, they didn't speak to each other anymore. She can barely stand the fact that her ex-friend and I are friends." I finished my monologue looking at everyone individually. I kept my eyes on John. "Why were you outside the Outer Banks with Sarah, anyway?" I asked, and I noticed embarrassment on the brunette's face.

"Once, when I was running away from the police because they wanted to take me to a foster family, Sarah helped me and took me to her home." The boy stopped when he saw that everyone was widening their eyes. "I was hurt and she wanted to help me. She took me to Ward's office, and there I noticed a large painting with Denmark Tanny."

"Who is this anyway?" I interrupted John's monologue as he quickly explained who the man was and what he had done for the Outer Banks.

"Continuing, Sarah took me to some huge library where Denmark's papers were. Thanks to this, I found his letter that he wrote to his son on the day of his death. I took it to our history teacher, who knew how to read the old language. At first I had no idea what it was about, but..." Here he stopped, only adding more tension. "I found out that the gold must be on the island."

"Did I hear that correctly? Do you know where we can find gold?" JJ asked his friend curiously, who nodded affirmatively. "What are we still waiting for?"

"Oh, by the way, Sarah, I have to meet her." I frowned, not understanding why we needed her. "She will bring me a map of the entire island that Denmark once owned, she will help us find gold."

We had been sitting in the Twinkie for a good hour now, it was stuffy and there was a storm raging outside. JJ had been smoking a joint for fifteen minutes, and Pope was keeping an eye on him to keep him sane. After a while, I heard someone screaming for help.

"Guys.." I started, but no one spoke, so I repeated it a little louder. Now two pairs of eyes were on me. "You heard that scream too." I stopped, and after a while I heard a cry for help again. We all jumped to our feet and ran towards the screaming.

The first thing I noticed was John lying on the ground and Sarah sitting next to him, trying to wake him up without success. I ran to the girl, helping her with her boyfriend.

"Why are you standing there like pegs! Someone call an ambulance." I turned to JJ and Pope, ordering them to run to Twinkie for the phone. JJ moved first, he was more agile than Pope. "What happened here?" This time I spoke to the blonde.

"Topper pushed him from the vantage point." She pointed to the street where the boy who caused the accident was no longer there. He'll probably get away with it and won't face any punishment. Typical. "He was jealous that I started dating John b."

"I'll kill the bastard." I said furiously, trying to get up, but the girl's hand didn't let me. I sighed softly and moved closer to her to hug her. "He'll be fine, he'll get through this somehow." I said, trying to comfort her somehow, I was worried about the brunette myself. He was like an older brother to me.

Soon we heard an ambulance approaching on its sirens, Pope ran to the street to direct the paramedics. However, I continued to reassure Sarah, it was obvious that she cared about the boy very much.

The rescuers took John B with them, the blonde also went with them after a long negotiation with the ambulance driver. So I went home with JJ and Pope. Maybank was behind the wheel and Heyward and I were in the back.

First we picked up the dark-skinned boy, and then JJ stopped by my house. I wanted to leave, but the boy's hand tightened on my wrist. I looked at him, wondering what he meant.

"Thank you again for saving my ass from those bogolas." The blonde gave me a gentle smile, still holding my wrist. "Maybe I can make it up to you somehow and invite you for some food?" JJ fucking Maybank wants to invite me on a one-on-one date? Probably still at my parents' place, I don't know how they'll handle me and JJ sitting together. They'll probably take it as a date and I'll listen to them talk about dating Maybank. "Kate?"

"Sure, when?" I asked, and the boy finally let go of my wrist. I got out of the Twinkie and stood by the passenger door. The blonde immediately lowered the window so that we could hear each other.

"Tomorrow at 4 p.m.?" He looked at me uncertainly, and I only nodded at his suggestions.

"See you tomorrow JayJ!" I screamed and ran home, it was already late, so I hoped my parents were already asleep. I was wrong, when I went inside I noticed my mother sitting in the living room. She was sitting on the couch and she wasn't in the mood. "Mom?" I asked, coming closer.

"Where have you been!" She started shouting at me, she wasn't happy that Kiara and I had escaped from Midsummer's Eve, which happens once a year.

"Sorry, I helped JJ with Rafe and his friends. They abused him, I couldn't leave it like that." I replied without really thinking about what I was saying, I knew that my mother didn't like the Maybank family and claimed that JJ would be like his father sooner or later.

"That thief? He's just like Luke, he can't be trusted!" She screamed again, probably waking up the entire neighborhood.

"He's not like his father! You're thinking, Mom, you don't know him as much as me and Kie, so stop judging him based on Luke!" I screamed in her face and ran up the stairs, leaving my mother in a stupor. I rarely stood up to her, but I couldn't stand it anymore. She couldn't insult my friend like that.

I entered my room, slamming the door behind me, probably causing one of the paintings in the corridor to fall to the ground. I didn't care and took off the damn dress and hung it on the hanger. I'm still taking off my make-up and wearing only an oversized T-shirt, which was my dad's. I often took his shirts and he didn't even notice. Tired, I threw myself on my soft bed, which I had already missed. Suddenly, a lot of thoughts started flowing into my head at once, I couldn't focus on one because they were all mixed up. But they were all related to this one boy my parents hated. I fell asleep only after I had sorted out all my thoughts, and no more thoughts were coming to my mind.
