MEMORY - AN INCEPTION STORY

CHAPTER 3

The team boards the flight and sits with Robert in a sectioned-off first class cabin. Cobb's body is placed inside the aircraft's lavatory, far away from Robert's field of vision. Arthur pick-pockets Robert's passport, and tries to return it to him as to start a conversation. He drugs his water before proposing a toast in his father's memory. Robert falls asleep immediately, as he is connected with the PASIV device. The rest of the team do the same and descend into the first layer, Yusuf's dream. We see them arrive in New York City as rains shower over them. Eames and Saito are inside a car, as they crash onto a taxi and hijack it. They commandeer the taxi, pick up Robert when Saito brings out a gun and holds it at his head as part of their kidnapping plot. They put a cover over Robert's head, whilst Eames prepares himself as an impersonation of Peter Browning by the using the rear-view mirror. Eames imitates Browning's voice and starts shouting as if he is getting beaten up, which makes Robert believe that they've abducted him as well. Ariadne and Arthur are in the other car behind them, when havoc strikes. Gunfire opens up on them left right and centre. Eames gets shot on the head and dies, and the team is now forced to take evasive measures. They enter into an old warehouse, as they pull Eames's body out of the car and lay it on a table. Yusuf also arrives driving a van. Ariadne is horrified, as Arthur tries to reassure her that he would wake up in the real world. Yusuf interrupts them explaining that, due to the sedatives they've taken, they won't wake up if they die. Instead, they'll be sent to limbo; an unconstructed dream space of infinite subconscious where time is practically non-existent. The team enters into a panicky state as they wrap their mind around the fact there's no way out from here except for the way forward. Meanwhile, the armed forces close in on their location. Saito barges in on Arthur, interrogating him as to why they were being attacked. Arthur revealed that Fischer's subconscious had been trained to fight against extraction and the forces attacking them are part of that defence. Just as the situation was heating up, Ariadne takes a step back and starts creating a bridge, the same bridge which she created from her memories during her first interaction with Cobb, the same one where Mal tried to attack her. She sprinted across the bridge in hope of finding Cobb, but all her efforts were in vain. As she reached the end of the bridge, she spotted two lovers leaning against the railing, who she recognised to be Cobb and Mal. She tries to approach them, but Mal sees her coming and tries to attack her. Yusuf rushes to save her, and injects Mal with the drug to put her to sleep. Cobb, who is trapped inside his own memory, tries to protect Mal, but is grabbed by Arthur. He tries to remind him of what's transpired but Cobb's notion of reality is lost deep in his memories.
