"...Marriage?" Aonung mumbled, seeming surprised. "Yeah, Marriage!" Neteyam exclaimed, a childish and excited expression plastered on his face. Aonung swallowed down the thought, sweat beading on his forehead as his breath hitched in his throat. "Uh- why so suddenly?" Aonung replied, still startled by the sudden topic.
Aonung and Neteyam had been together for 3 years; long enough in Neteyam's opinion. They've had their fair share of romantic and sexual moments, so it was about damn time marriage came into play. Though the two were now adults, living together, and own a four month old puppy, the pair still can't figure out why exactly the thought of a wedding scares them so much.
"It can be blue!" Neteyam pressed, inching his way closer to Aonung as a sign of excitement. "Wait, go back, we aren't even engaged yet." Aonung replied, cutting Neteyam's train of thought off. "Well, yeah, but we can still plan." Neteyam mutters, pouting slightly. "Babe, I don't think that's how it works..." Aonung sighs, smiling to himself. Of course, Aonung didn't hate the idea of a wedding, he was just...unprepared; as he was the whole way through their relationship.
For the last three years of their relationship, Neteyam was always the first to swallow his pride and do things. He was the one to confess, the one to conduct their first official kiss, the ne to plan their dates, and even the one to introduce the other to his family first. So, he was kind of expecting Aonung to be the one down on his knees with a shiny ring waiting for Neteyam.
"...Doggy decision?" Neteyam questioned, waiting eagerly for Aonung's reply.
"...Doggy decision." Aonung replies, standing from his seat and making his way to the living room.
It may sound childish, but they always relied on their dog, Myra, to make decisions when they're fighting over things. The way this worked was both Neteyam and Aonung would hold out a doggy treat, calling their furry baby's name out. Whoever the puppy would run to wins, and that settles it. Stupid, but effective.
Aonung and Neteyam sit in the living room, both a decent distance away from Myra. Neteyam holds out his doggy treat alongside Aonung, beginning to say the puppy's name in a sing-song voice. After a couple minutes of calling and patting of the carpet, the small dog makes its way over to Neteyam, cuddling up in his lap and rubbing her little face against his stomach. Neteyam smiles, petting Myra's ears and glancing up at Aonung who was already scowling.
"That settles it! You're proposing!" Neteyam announces, smiling to himself. Aonung rolls his eyes, standing up and sighing. "...Cheater. That furball always chooses you..." Aonung mumbles, walking out of the room. Though he had a scowl plastered on his face and a cold voice, Neteyam could tell he was slightly happy to propose.
"Love you, Ao." Neteyam calls as Aonung leaves the room. "Love you too, Teyam..." Aonung replies walking out of the living room and towards their bedroom. Now, ring shopping...
~~~~~~time skip~~~~~~
Today's the day. How awful.
For the past month and a half, Aonung has been constantly on his toes about the proposal. White ring? too plain. Black ring? Too dark. Green ring? Maybe...? No, not the one. Blue ring? It's nice, but...no. After a whole week of ring hunting and constant stress, Aonung finally settled on a beautiful citrine ring to match Neteyam's eyes. The fine crystal was settled between a shiny circle of real silver. Since Aonung was annoyingly rich, he decided this just wasn't enough. So, he had the jewelers engrave both Neteyam and Aonung's initials on the back of the ring followed by a small heart and the year "2023" on it.
Now, the setting...Neteyam was social, yes, but Aonung knew better than to propose in front of a bunch of strangers in a fancy restaurant. The park was definitely out of the question considering it was also pretty public and old ladies would usually wander around. Aonung had also decided against proposing in their apartment since, if he was Neteyam, he'd probably decline the proposal because of the horrible placement. So, Aonung found himself waiting on the beach, a small box containing the ring settled neatly in his hand as he stares at the bright stars in the night sky. Hopefully this goes well...
After a couple minutes if waiting, Aonung hears the sound of a car parking up beside the beach, an ecstatic Neteyam jumping out of the driver's seat and rushing towards Aonung. The smaller boy runs towards Aonung, chuckling quietly as he looks up at him.
"Ao! You texted me to come here, why all of the sudden?" Neteyam questioned, smiling up at Aonung. Of course Aonung didn't tell Neteyam he was proposing, that would ruin the surprise! But as he watched Lo'ak and Tsireya get out of the car, he really wished he did.
"...You brought them?" Aonung whispers, clearly irritated and caught off guard. He wasn't expecting Lo'ak and Tsireya to be here, so now his perfect proposal is most probably ruined..."Um, yeah? Something wrong, Ao?" Neteyam asked, staring up at the taller boy. Neteyam wasn't an idiot, he knew when Aonung was pissed. And right now, Aonung was practically fuming with rage.
"Hey, bro! Long time not see!" Lo'ak called, waving over at Aonung. That only enraged Aonung further. Aonung had hoped, no, prayed that Lo'ak would just hang out with Tsireya, chatting a little, and wait until Aonung was on one knee. He also assumed they would get the hint and leave after seeing Aonung proposing, but that idea was basically sling shot out the window the second Lo'ak came bouncing over like a little kid.
"Aonung, you look nice. You even braided your hair up with pins? What's the special occasion?" Tsireya asks, standing beside Lo'ak. "Just...wanted to look nice..." Aonung replies between clenched teeth, his eyes glued on Neteyam and his hands gripping the tiny box tightly.
"Hey, Reya, I hear there are cool shells over that way, why don't you take a look?" Aonung says in the politest tone he can muster, begging his sister will finally take the hint. But of course..."Nah, I have enough at home. We wanted to hang out with Teyam." Tsireya replies with an innocent and unknowing smile on her face. Aonung lets out a loud breath, sighing to himself.
"Jesus, okay, I give up!" Aonung groans, dropping down to one knee and holding the ring out in front of Neteyam. "Neteyam te Suli Tsyeyk'itan, will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?" Aonung blurts out, a look of both embarrassment and hope on his face. Tsireya and Lo'ak both stand shocked, staring at Aonung who was now patiently awaiting Neteyam's reply.
Neteyam stares at Aonung, obviously at a loss for words. He stands for a couple moments, simply processing everything that just took place. "I-I..." Neteyam mumbles, staring at Aonung. A huge grin appears on his face, his eyes locked on Aonung. "Yes, of course!" Neteyam finally answers, smiling like a little kid who'd just gotten candy. Aonung lets out a huge sigh of relief, standing up and gently wrapping his arms around Neteyam.
"Oh, thank Eywa...I was scared you were going to say no..." Aonung mumbles into Neteyam's ear. It's clear he had been holding his breath since the second he had asked the question. Neteyam simply chuckles, shaking his head. "Why would I say no, Skxawng?" Neteyam replies, holding his lover close.
"I love you, Ao." Neteyam whispers. "I love you too, Teyam." Aonung replies.
