I slowly open my eyes as I get blinded by the brightness of the world. I closed my eyes and turned over to my right so I'm not blinded by the sun. I feel my face gently bump into something. I slightly moved back and noticed it was Dexter's chest. I lifted my head and looked down realizing I was using his arm as a pillow.

Dexter took a big breath in. I did the only thing reasonable. I laid my head back down and pretended to be asleep.

I hear him exhale. He gently taps my arm. "Kira, wake up Kira." His morning voice broke the silence that was in the air. I slowly opened my eyes.

"Mornin." I replied. We both sat up.

Dexter goes to open his mouth but, "Good morning survivors!" The extremely loud and excited voice exclaimed from the speakers. "Today is your third event! Now the fourteen of you go and line up!" Madam Raven sounded a bit impatient.

Dexter and I climbed down off the roof and went to wake up Myla. She is somehow a very deep sleeper. "I don't want to." Myla whined like a little kid.

"Myla you ne-" Dexter pauses as I make my way over to her and pull her out of bed. "What are you doing?" He asks.

"Are you really questioning me?" I ask to be dramatic. He nods. Ouch I'm hurt. I have a younger sister who's just like this." I said plainly during that last sentence. Myla gets up and is ready to leave now. I give Dexter a look saying I know what I'm doing.

We all line up. The guards count us off and take us to the location. We entered a room that looked like a fake library. Shelves and books that look like there are just 3-D decorations on the wall. Not the one where the picture moves but on that slightly sticks out of the wall.

There are seven tables with chess tables. "Now, we are gonna give you a card. That card had your table number and what color you were playing. You go there and sit until further directions." The guards start one by one giving us a card.
Myla leaves first. She sat at table three on the black side of the chess board. Some others go to their table. Dexter was the next one of the three of us to go. He was at table two also on the back side. I was given my card right after Dexter.

I looked down and saw white on the card. My heart froze. I began holding my breath. Really white?! I suck at playing as white! Was I gonna play against Dexter? I continued reading and saw table seven. I exhaled in relief. I walked over to my table to see a small skinny blonde boy. He seemed very scared. I don't blame him. I am too. The last few people sat down. There were a total of seven guards in the room. One for each table. They all stood next to the table to watch the game. "Okay, you guys have one hour to play and finish your game. Begin... now!"

Silence filled the air. The sound of chess pieces moving is all you can hear. I grabbed my knight on G1 and moved it to F3. The blonde boy instantly moved his pawn forward two spaces, landing on D5. I grabbed the same knight from before and moved it to D4. Blonde boy grabbed his pawn and moved it two spaces forward landing on E5.

I studied the board. I grabbed my pawn and moved it to C3, protecting my knight. I noticed his pawn was threatening my knight. The knights are always my downfall. I watched as his pawn moved diagonally, one space taking my knight. I used my pawn from before, taking his. He paused for a moment. He reached for his knight and moved it to C6. I grabbed my other knight, the only knight I have now to C3. Instantly he grabbed his knight from C6 and moved it down to B4. I reached over to grab a piece.

BANG!

I whipped my head over in the direction of the noise. It was Dexter's table. There was a body laying there with blood. The guard at his table escorted Dexter out of the room. He was the first one out. Already?! I felt like the game had just begun. I looked back at the board trying to focus. It felt like my arms had tensed. A weight in my chest had formed. I grabbed my pawn in the far left and moved it forward once to A3. He immediately retreated his knight to C6. I grabbed the pawn and moved it forward once more not knowing what to do. He grabs his knight and moves to D4 taking a pawn. I move a pawn forward one space to B3.
