I wake up to a sudden rush of cold on my upper body. I open my eyes to find a blanket that kinda fell off. "Morning Kira." I whipped my entire body around and saw Dexter sitting up stretching. I sat up and tacked him into a hug, squeezing tightly, not wanting to let go. Well tight to me. Dexter chuckles, "Miss me that much huh?" I let go of the hug and punched him in the arm. I begin to feel my cheeks heat up.
"So are you okay? What happened after they took me away?" I started asking. I hope nothing terrible happened.
"Yeah I'm okay." Dexter pauses. "I got to talk to my mom." Dexter begins to sound a bit different. Like his mind was elsewhere. He snaps out of the daze he was in. "How are you feeling? You know after everything yesterday." Dexter asks concerned. I just stay silent. I haven't fully processed everything yesterday. I'm still very worried. For my family's sake. I also feel a little guilty. Because of Myla. "Hey, let's go head to our spot okay?" Dexter interrupted me from my thoughts. "To help clear your head?" He added to his previous comment. I just simply nodded. He gives me a small smile and begins to climb down the roof.
As I climb down off the roof the speakers turn on. "Hello my last six survivors! We are at our final event! Can you believe it!" She says, sounding as bubbly as usual. I roll my eyes and jump to the ground. "The final event is a gladiator battle! Now instead of the usual one week I've decided to give you a whole month to train. Too-da-loo my fellow survivors! Too-da-loo!" The speakers turn off.
I look around at the other four people around and then motion to Dexter to let's go. We walked over there as I somehow managed to keep my composure. I feel like a balloon filled with too much air about to explode from the pressure. As soon as we get to the waterfall I shout, "A gladiator fight!" My heart begins to pound in my chest. A tightness grows on my lungs. I start to pace back and forth. "How are we even gonna do this!?" I begin to pace back and forth faster. "A gladiator fight means till the last man standing!" I pause and look at Dexter. "I don't want to kill you!" I slide my hands up my face into my hair.
"And I don't want to kill you." Dexter grabs my hands. "Let's agree when we're the last two standing we won't kill each other." He says calmly. Does he really have faith that we're gonna be the last two standing?
I take a deep breath. "You're right, we're gonna be okay. The two of us are gonna be okay."
"What combat skills are you good at? Maybe we could teach each other skills." Dexter stated.
"Hand to hand combat." I said. "What about you?"
"Fighting with a weapon." He stated. He looked at me and asked almost in a joking way. "So if you're good at hand to hand combat why did you get kidnapped?"
I kinda didn't get the message that he was joking because I snipped back, "Asshole. I'd love to see you fight chloroform."
"Couldn't you knee or like throw an elbow to the person?" He asked.
I paused. He's not wrong. "Okay smart guy, if you're so good at fighting with a weapon why did you get kidnapped?" I smirked.
"Maybe I didn't have a weapon on me?" Dexter smirked back.
The smirk disappeared from my face. I didn't think that through. "Shut up." I grumbled.
The days pass in a blur. One day I was teaching Dexter takedowns. He pulled both of my ankles towards him as he pushed into me. I fall back flat on my back. Some air was knocked out of me. He got on top of me in a full mount position. My face immediately heats up. I know I'm probably bright red and he probably noticed. Of course he did, he started smirking to mess with me. "Bet you can't get out of this one rosy." He challenged me. My arm on the left chopped down his left one. I buck my hips up, rolling him over to his left. I was on top in full mount pinning him down.
His face immediately turns bright red like I did. "Well would you look at that, I got out of this one rosy." I smiled.
We continued training till the dark. We walk back and clean ourselves in the shower room. I climbed up on the roof waiting for Dexter. I looked up at the stars shining brightly in the sky. Dexter shows up after a few minutes. We both lay down looking at the sky in silence. "What are we gonna do if we both get out of here?" I asked, breaking the silence.
Dexter looked at me confused. "What do you mean?"
"Well if we both get out alive, with or without family," I paused, saddened by the idea of leaving without my family. "Are we gonna stay together or split ways?" I looked at Dexter.
He stays quiet. He looked as if he's thinking about what to say. "What do you mean together?" He smirks as he tries to change the subject.
I roll my eyes. My cheeks begin to heat up a bit in the cool breeze. "I'm serious Dexter, what are we gonna do?"
He goes silent. He turned his head to the sky. "I don't know, I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there." I wasn't exactly happy with that answer but I wasn't gonna ask why. He seems to be distracted. Like he's lost in thought. Is he worried about how this is all gonna play out too? I look back up to the sky. A bit cold I move closer to Dexter laying head on his chest. Listening to the best of his heart I slowly doze off to sleep.
