Max and Chloe promised Alice help, should she ever need it. And they genuinely meant it. Would Alice ever call them? She had their number.

The road trip was cancelled. They planned to spend the rest of Saturday and Sunday at home. A staycation.

Driving through the sleepy town of Bright Falls, Chloe remarked: "Alice and Alan, they are sort of like us, aren't they? Star-crossed lovers."

"Not quite Chloe. They had all the same hardships, but none of the happy endings. Not yet at least."

After a moment of silence, Chloe changed the subject to something far more mundane: "We should get our money back for the cabin. The service was sub-par, wouldn't you agree?"

Max laughed. "You want to get our money back from a destructive otherworldly entity, Chloe? How do you plan on going about that?"

"Whatever that thing at the bottom of the lake is, we paid using my debit card. So we can request a chargeback. We paid on Thursday evening, so we're still within the forty eight hour limit our bank has."

"And what reason are we going to give to the bank for a chargeback? Demonic possession?"

"No. We're going to say the cabin was thrashed and we couldn't stay there. Which is an accurate description of how it looked like after Alice and I had a shootout with a gang of axe-wielding maniacs inside."

"Those nine hundred bucks surely would be nice to have back." After a while, Max added: "Have I ever told you that you are hot when you exhibit useful life skills?"

Chloe smiled wide. "No Max, you haven't. And now that you have, I need you to repeat that at least once a week."

"Done deal."

Max had a feeling this wasn't the last time she and Chloe got themselves into strange trouble. It probably wasn't even the last time they ran into Alan and Alice. And it most certainly wasn't the last time she had to face her doubts and fears.

On the driver's seat, Chloe was focused on braving the winding road. Max looked at her dreamingly and smiled, like she always did when she had a moment to appreciate that she got to spend her life with Chloe.

As long as she was riding shotgun with the girl of her dreams, everything was right in Max's world.
