A faint whispering broke me out of my daydream.
Convinced I was hearing things, I cautiously walked over to rear screen door, and peered outside into the fray.
Shocked, I stepped away from the window, chills running down my spine.
In the midst of the wild winds and torrential downpour, a man was stood in my yard. Our eyes met as recognition dawned in my brain.
It was my brother. The birthmark on his right temple, his abnormal height, and his now almost fully decayed flesh.
He was still in his burial suit, now covered in splotches of mud. My stomach lurched.
A tap sounded from the front door, and I began to walk towards it and hesitated.
Another tap.
I quietly crept towards the door, and peeped through the peephole.
What is going on?
Am I losing my mind?
I wondered, as I peered out at the bag of bones dressed in my late aunt's church dress.
"Let me in, Kay-Kay. I know you're home."
A clap of thunder sounded, startling me into motion.
I ran over to my phone, and called my mother. She answered, sounding a bit panicked.
"Kay! I was just about to call you! Lock the doors and don't let anybody in. Draw the curtains, and do not go outside. Matter of fact, go upstairs in your room and lock that door too."
" Ma... what's going on? Why is... is that Devon outside? And Aunt Cheryl..." I trailed off, finally realizing this was actually happening.
" I- I don't know Kay. But don't you open up that damn door, or answer to anything that's calling to you out there."
" Ma, I'm getting scared. Please tell me you're coming home soon, or at least are somewhere safe."
She sighed heavily.
" I can't leave here 'till the storm is over. But I promise I'm safe. Now you need to be paying attention to what's going on there to keep yourself safe. I'll call back in an hour to check on you. Okay?"
" Yes ma'am. I love you Ma."
I whispered, my voice cracking.
"I love you too. Please, do as I said."
Taking deep breaths, I went around closing curtains, checking locks, and sneaking glances outside.
I ran upstairs to do the same, checking the windows.
The tapping on the front door continued, now joined by another sound that seemed...closer.
Like inside the house, closer.
Panic began to surge through my body as my blood turned ice cold.
So...if the dead are rising...that means the realtor was shady as hell or...
Mama?
My question was answered with a loud bang as the basement door exploded open.
"Kay...."
he rasped in a deep voice.
"Daddy's Home."
