Embarking on this journey of seeking God was no easy task, but let me tell you, it's a decision I'll never regret – not even for a beat.
Once upon a time, my playlist was filled with afro beats and amapiano tunes that had me grooving all day long. The irresistible allure of amapiano dance moves had me hooked, and despite hearing murmurs of its supposed demonic origins, I turned a deaf ear. Little did I know that this dance would soon become my signature move, even when I listened to gospel music. I had separate playlists for every aspect of my life, from bathing to eating to sleeping – each one dedicated to worldly songs. I had the lyrics down to a tee, and I even found myself joining TikTok challenges, hoping to gather likes and followers. I had two music apps: one exclusively for gospel tunes (though it was rarely touched), and the other a mix of everything. It was all about the world, with little room for the divine.
However, my awakening began when I noticed how these musicians weren't exactly hiding their true intentions. I stumbled upon content that shed light on the deceptive nature of worldly songs.
When I started seeking God, I made a conscious decision to cut off worldly music from my life. In those first two weeks, it felt like I might wither away if I didn't indulge in my old favorites. The struggle was real, but I knew deep down that trying wasn't enough – I had to take action. At first, I mistakenly believed that Christian music was limited to the traditional gospel sound, and it lacked the vibe I craved. But as I delved deeper, I discovered an entire universe of Christian music that transcended genres.
Let me share some of the Christian artists I've come to love:
- Hulvey
- Lecrae
- Caleb Gordon
- Limoblaze
- Childlike CiCi
- Aable
- Amanda Nolan
- Nathaniel Bassey
- Prosper Germoh
- Mercy Chinwo
- Benjamin Dube
- Joe Mettle
- Sonnie Badu
- Tim Godfrey
- Dax
- Von Michael
- Soweto Gospel Choir
- Mark Success
- J. Monty
- JWLKRS WorshipAnd the list goes on! 🥹
During this period of abstaining from worldly music, my life has undergone a remarkable transformation. If only I could shield my ears whenever those songs tempt me, I would in a heartbeat. The joy I experience when listening to Christian music is beyond words. Every note, every lyric resonates with my soul, creating an emotional connection that transports me to a place of peace. I embrace the opportunity to praise the King, just as Revelation 1:8 teaches us. Instead of singing about lust, drugs, and all things contrary to God's will, I find myself inadvertently praising the devil. When I look back at my old videos or reminisce about the past, a mix of embarrassment and "if only I knew earlier" rushes over me. But amidst it all, there's an overwhelming sense of joy knowing that I'm not too late to change. That's why I'm driven to help others on their own journey of transformation!
