Do you know those nerves you feel when you begin a marathon? Possibly anxious, determined, and fear of failure?
That's how Jocelyn is feeling in this exact moment. But times ten.
She was sitting along the edge of the ledge staring out to the city lights, her arms resting the metal beam, and her feet swaying below her.
Her heart was beating fast as the anxiety finally sank in. She was savouring the last few minutes. The last few minutes that everyone was still breathing and unharmed.
Peter left a few minutes earlier to join the others to make sure the plan was still efficient. But Jocelyn couldn't move from the worry in the pit of her stomach that something wrong was about to happen tonight.
Her powers have been constantly bothering her all day but haven't acted on it. If she was in danger, her powers would teleport her out of the situation. But it hasn't.
"Hey..." Jocelyn looked over her shoulder to see her other dimensional-older self standing behind her, wearing a similar Aura white, black, and purple suit. "Peter got word that they are almost here. It is time to get in position." She explained with a worried tone.
Jocelyn nodded, "I will be right there."
Her-other-dimensional-self nodded and left to her position, glancing over her shoulder hesitantly. The youngest-Jocelyn has been rather distant since they arrived at the Statue of Liberty. No one has said anything but everyone has noticed it. But no one has asked why, noticing the teenage girl wants to be left alone rather then bothered. With a deep breath, Melissa continued on to her post and left the young girl alone.
A sigh escaped Jocelyn's pink lips once she was left alone again and she glanced down at the white mask in her tightened grasp. This mask symbolizes a shield she has been using from the world since she was fourteen. It became her alter-ego, societies idol, and Jocelyn's greatest secret. But it has also caused unlimited amount of agony, guilt, and loss.
Yet it also brought her closer to Peter.
Looking at the white fabric in her hands, she felt like she was looking in a mirror. This mask has faced battles, death, and tormenting for many years. But it was hers.
This mask is the hero that saved the universe against Thanos, saved the world against her uncle, and saved London from Mysterio.
Nine years ago Aura was born but tonight, something was going to happen. It was time this never ending marathon finally comes to an end and they declare a winner.
Slipping the white mask over her face, the eyes illuminated and appeared numerous data statistics inside of it. "Good evening, Jocelyn. How are you feeling?" Her A.I. voice rang through the mask.
Jocelyn let out a nervous breath. "Anxious." She admitted standing up to her feet and gripped the metal bar tightly for security worried she might fall over.
Around her, the wind began to pick up and she heard a few shouts behind her. Peter was yelling at the others to get into position and her grip tightened on the metal bar. It was time. The villains have finally arrived.
"Would you like me to play your fight playlist?" Her A.I. requested.
A small relieved giggle escaped Jocelyn's lips, her shoulders falling unintentionally. Her A.I. knows her almost too well. Better than herself sometimes. "Actually, that would be really nice. Thank you." She agreed.
Seconds later, humming rang through the small speakers inside the mask followed by the voice of Jocelyn's favourite singers. Jocelyn let out a deep breath taking in New York City's beauty one final time.
