"Boss, why are you checking inventor, shouldn't the bartender be doing that?" Mateo spoke as he approached the bar

"Boss, why are you checking inventor, shouldn't the bartender be doing that?" Mateo spoke as he approached the bar.

Now, usually I wouldn't bother doing this sort of thing, but I was down a bartender and another wouldn't be making it in until later.

"He doesn't come in for a few hours, so I figured I'd get this out the way while I waited."

"Need something to keep you busy?" Mateo asked.

"More or less" I answered.

"Are you nervous about tonight?"

"I never get nervous."

"Sure."

"How about you leave that for somebody else to do and we talk? Hermano a Hermano" -Brother to Brother-

I scoffed, "What the fuck are we going to talk about?"

"I don't know, whatever you want to get off your chest. Come on, lay it on me, anything... complain about the light fixtures or something."

"Do I look like someone's seventy-two-year-old grandfather? Why would I wish to chat about light components?"

"Well...you are up there in age."

Irritation surges through me as I look at him and consider breaking his nose. Mateo and I have been friends for many years. I give him more leeway than I do with most others, but as of lately his jokes have become less amusing.

"Fuck you, Mateo... Fuck your old jokes and your abuelo too."

"Jeez, leave my abuelo out of this...he was a good man, may he rest in peace," he said, before kissing his cross around his neck.

"But like I was saying, let's talk about something interesting, like that fine piece of ass you're bringing in here tonight."

"I don't want to talk about her with you, " I choose to ignore the surge of jealousy at Mateo's appreciation of Jazmin's body.

"Come on, I've been advising you since the beginning... I think I deserve to hear a piece of the action."

"Let's be clear, you deserve nothing, shit I would hand over a portion of the action to a rat before I give you anything."

"Are we talking hypothetically or actuality?"

"Pick your poison." I shrugged.

"Harsh." he said, and I shook my head.

"Well, I tried. I'm going to go in the back and see which one of these ladies I can screw before we open... Don't hurt yourself up here, old man." Mateo said as he hopped off the bar stool.

I gave him the finger, and he laughed, walking away.

I finished counting the bar inventory, double-checked the guest and seating charts, made certain everything was up to my expectations.
