"Long night," I groan running my hand over my face

"Long night," I groan running my hand over my face. I spent the entire night tormenting that coward before ultimately ending his life, and nothing could match the sense of satisfaction I experienced when the light faded from his eyes. When I got home, I couldn't bear to go into my bedroom where Jazmin was sleeping, so I opted to sleep on the couch in my office instead.

"Pendejo." I spit, while in the process of unbuttoning my shirt, my phone starts ringing with Mateo's name appearing on the display. The boar normally likes to sleep until noon on Sundays. I know there's only one reason why he would be calling this early.

"What is it, Mateo?" I bark, cutting straight to the chase.

"I heard about what happened. Is your girlfriend alright?"

"Corea issued hollow threats. Jazmin is fine."

"No, not that. Felix mentioned that you got angry at some jerk in the club last night and shot him." he says, and my body goes rigid.

"Not over the phone." I bite out. Mateo understands that discussing business over the phone is unwise, and even though we typically used a secure line, one must exercise caution these days.

"Alright."

"I need you to oversee all business operations today."

"Okay, any reason why?"

"Nothing. Just can you do this, or should I call Felix to assist."

There is silence on the other side of the line before he answers, "No, I got it."

"Good." I cut the line. I stash my phone in my pocket, exit my office, and move towards the kitchen picking up on a little off-key singing as I approach the entrance.

Marie stands with her back to me, searching through a drawer. She doesn't notice me as I walk over and stand a few steps behind her at the kitchen counter. "What are you looking for?"

She jumps with a startled yelp and closes the drawer with a bang.

"Ay! Santa Maria! You almost gave me a heart att—" She stops mid-sentence and just stands there staring at me, her eyes huge. "You look like shit."

I figured my looks might come off as slightly unkempt. My clothes are likely wrinkled and my hair looks messy from running my hands through it repeatedly. "Hello to you, too."

She gives a gentle smile. "Are you hungry? I made your favorite, Concha's."

"Thanks, but I will pass."

Although I declined, Marie insists on bringing me a plate and a cup of coffee that I really need. I thanked her, and she's waved me off before returning to her earlier task.

"Do you know if Jazmin is awake?"

"She is, she has been awake for some time now." she says, and with a hint of sarcasm in her voice, Marie adds," She's a real ray of sunshine, that one."
