Diary of a recruit.
Entry # 1
For all mankind, the year 845 marked a turning point in history. It was the day that Wall Maria, one of the three great walls that was said to be impenetrable, was destroyed by the same monsters that humanity lived in fear of and like caged birds.
Humans was forced to fall back behind Wall Rose, protecting itself from those enemies who sought our complete annihilation, the Titans.
The lives lost after that fateful day totaled around 10,000 people. Family, friends, acquaintances ... there were no prejudices in the eyes of the Titans. To those primitive, empty eyes, we were only one thing: meal.
But I have always thought that, if one day, the human being was annihilated, it would not be by the hands of the Titans, it would be by human hands.
This was evidenced a year after the fall of Wall Maria. The government ordered a military mission to regain territory lost to the Titans. But everyone really knew what it meant even if no one talked about it; a purge to get rid of excess mouths to feed.
My father had failed in what he had worked so hard and sacrificed to achieve. His efforts were not enough.
That day, 250,000 people were sent as sacrifices to the Titans so that the rest of humanity would not starve. Of that fifth of humanity sent to die, only 100 survived. Fortunately, my brother was able to survive as he is part of the Scout Corps and has training to face the Titans.
At the time, he was only 11 years old. But despite my young age, I have witnessed the selfishness of the human being. Of the malice that he possesses. That same malice that forces some to sacrifice and live their lives in the mud so that others wallow in wealth and luxury.
Yes ... this is the world we live in. Life is unfair.
But, in the same way, I have also seen the good in people. That kindness that encourages giving a piece of bread to a hungry person or giving a canteen of water to the thirsty. I have witnessed their non-judgmental kindness, without even expecting a thank you in return. My father is a clear example of them. And I have decided to focus on that.
I am weak, I admit it. And in this world, the weak die. Regardless of your feelings or thoughts about it. But I am privileged, that is why I have survived to this day. Now is the time to get strong.
And that's why I'm here today. On my way to enlist in the 104th Recruit Corps.
I don't know what the future holds for me. Perhaps a horrible, agonizing death at the hands of the Titans. Perhaps the same human decadence that I am so used to. Perhaps the same goodness that I have seen countless times in my father. Who knows? Maybe even find love.
But what I do know is that I will keep the promise I made to my brother to join him in bringing a little hope in this dark world.
My name is Victor A ... Sorry, I can't reveal my last name. My father told me it would be better not to, considering who our family is.
If I die prematurely, I hope you find this journal and read it.
This is my story.
