I had been in school for about two months now. I was adjusting pretty well; I was expanding my inner circle with friends. For the most part, the girls on the soccer team were really nice. It helped that Emma was extremely outgoing and made friends with them quick. I on the other hand, tend to get wrapped up in school and my art that my social life takes the back burner. Once school starts though, everything else pretty much takes the back burner. I have to get straight A's which, thankfully, I have been able to pull off. Except for that A- in Algebra last calendar year.
Although, this year I did not want my hobbies to have to go to the back burner. I wanted to be able to do everything I loved. A few weeks into school, I decided to stop taking the bus. Mama usually worked early morning shifts at the hospital so she could be home by dinner and come to my soccer matches, so she didn't know I was walking. I enjoyed the fresh air, got some exercise in and it also gave me the opportunity to take photos along the way. Along the way, I found myself in front of a park with a family of deer in the distance. In result, I pulled out my camera out of my bag and knelt down as I tried to get a few good shots. The birds were my next target, and then the trees. I felt my phone buzz in my pocket, pulling it out from my back pocket noticed the time. I was already 15 minutes late to first period. Shit.
Emma:
This is why you need to take the damn bus. Get your ass to school.
Giovanna:
I am on my way.
I ran the remainder of the way to school. I knew I was screwed. I used to never be late to class; but today, today was my third day in a row and the latest I've been. It took me another 15 minutes to get onto campus, so by the time I got into the class I was 30 minutes late. When you arrive 30 minutes late to a class it is marked as an absence. Which meant eventually my mother was going to receive a notification of the absence on the parent portal. Hopefully she would have a busy day and I could get to the notification before she did. Mama had no idea I was not taking the bus to school, and she would not like that I was walking alone or that I was late. How could I be so stupid. It's one thing to be late, but not this late. I need to pay attention to the time.
"Nice of you to show up Ms. Deluca." My chemistry professor said as he looked at me. I nodded my head avoiding eye contact and sat in an empty desk. I happened to be thirty minutes late to class, yet it still dragged. Once the bell rang, I closed my books and waited for most of the class to empty out before going up to professor's desk.
"Mr. Johnson, I wanted to apologize for being late again. There's no excuse for my actions, but I was wondering if there was any way you could let today slide so I do not accumulate an absence?"
"The only way for it to be excused is if you have a valid reason with a note from a parent or Dr. with a valid reason." Hmm. That could be easy to obtain.
"I will have a letter tomorrow... I am sorry again." I mentioned as I slipped my backpack over my shoulder.
"Don't be sorry Deluca, just show up on time." He said as I exited the classroom and walked toward my locker.
"Well? What kept you from making it to school this time?" Emma asked as she approached me, and we began walking down the hall to our next class.
"I walked past memorial park and there were deer, some birds and just some people walking." I shrugged. "I just couldn't miss the opportunity." Since my camera was in my locker, I pulled up my linked camera app on my phone to show her the photos I had taken.
