Cold autumn rain pattered against your hoodie, soaking into the fabric and slowly seeping into your skin. Not the best choice of protection from the current weather.
It didn't matter right now though, as you were quite literally running for your life.
The shouts and loud footsteps of your pursuers weren't fading. At this rate, you weren't going to outrun them.Fuck! You cursed, wondering if the wallet and few loose pieces of stolen jewelry was worth the trouble.
No... this was your rent this month, you have no other option. It's either this, or risking eviction. You were sure your landlord wouldn't be so understanding this go-around.You turned the corner, and eyed an alleyway right up ahead. Thank god, the universe had mercy upon you.
Quickly, without a second thought, you slid left, plunging into the shadows before you.
You leapt forward behind a trashcan, and a few planks of scrapped wood and cardboard. Enough to hide you, but just barely.
You tried desperately to slow your breathing, but your heart wouldn't stop pounding in your chest.
You could hear them running closer, and closer, until they were right outside the entrance. Three of them ran forward without care, but one remained behind.
"There's no use hiding!" They shouted, inching closer.
Shit... Your hands were clasped around your mouth, glued in place. You suppressed a shiver, you dared not even breathe, as that very well could give you away.
Movement caught your vision, as you swallowed a scream and squinted your eyes shut. A rat skittered across your shoe and towards the opposite wall.
The pursuer took one last step forward before stopping in their tracks. The creature, spooked, skittered away, back towards the safer darkness.
The person grimaced, and cursed under their breath. Deciding to cut their losses and join back with the group, they ran off, leaving you alone once more.
Once their footsteps were out of earshot, you exhaled heavily and gasped for air. You must have held your breath at least a minute.
"H-holy sh-shit...." You muttered in-between gasps,
You pulled the wallet out from your dampened pocket, everything happened so fast, you didn't even get to see how much was in it. You peaked inside, only to frown in disappointment.
There were no cards whatsoever, not that you liked to resort to them, they were much easier to track.
There was only $25 in cash.
"No fucking way... NO FUCKING WAY!! I can't pay jack with this shit!!" You shouted, throwing the wallet against the wall.
You balled up your fist and punched the brick wall futilely, and immediately regretted it.
"Fuck!" You winced, shaking your hand repeatedly, blood already beginning to turn your knuckles red, and soon purple.
You slid back down, head in your knees and sighed. Pulling out your last resorts. A ruby necklace with a gold chain, and diamond ring.
Hopefully you could get some money out of these. You needed at least $600 to make rent, food and other bills could be worried about later.
You slowly rose to your feet and walked out of the alleyway. Luckily there was a pawn shop nearby, maybe luck would be on your side.
"Sleazy fast-talking scumbag." You cursed under your breath. $500 was all he was willing to give you.
You couldn't afford to come up short. Looks like your night wasn't over just yet.
