Halloween Special

A/N: Technically, this is canon to this story, but would take place, let's say, prior to S2. Maybe a spoiler or two for what's to come. Halloween doesn't exist in the OP universe, but that doesn't mean I cannot have fun with the spooky mood... or the idea of it.

A/N 2: This was originally written in October 2023, but I decided to take it down, edit it and repost it now so that it makes sense in the chronology. It's better than the original version, though. Enjoy and let me know if you want the Christmas special while we wait for S2. Also, if there's any Naruto fans around here, I have a new KakashixOC story up :D

Usopp stared wide eyed into the nothingness and flinched as the sky thundered from above; the Going Merry sailed through an eerie dark mist that seemed to stretch as an eternal night, illuminated only by the torches perched on every hanger on deck.

It had been days since they entered the strange foggy region. He had never seen fog as dark and thick as this, not even when they first came upon Baratie. He had grown up in a sunny village, running down its illuminated streets, the sun always a companion burning the scalp at the back of his head, even through the headscarf he wore. He couldn't shake the feeling that settled over him, similar to the dark fog surrounding their ship, when every morning after he woke up he found they were still under that perpetual storm waiting to start, the sound of thunders following them from the skies. A drop of rain had yet to fall.

"You okay, mate?"

He peered over the edge of the ship, desperately hoping for a glimpse of clear sky or open sea, when a tall blonde man in a perfectly groomed suit and polished shoes came to lean next to him against the ship's railing, a cigarette hanging from his lips. The man exhaled a plume of smoke and glanced at Usopp with an air of curiosity. It was Sanji.

He gulped before answering:

"Yeah..." Usopp responded, his voice tinged with frustration, "H-how much longer you think?"

Sanji looked around, before leaning down on his elbows and bringing the cigarette back to his lips. He exhaled:

"Who knows... but I'm getting tired of not seeing the damn sun."

"Did y-you hear Zoro last night?" Usopp asked quickly, fidgeting with his hands. "About the sailors' stories on water vortexes? The closer you hear them thunders, the closer you're to them." Sanji smirked as the guy snapped his fingers in front of his face, "Just like that, you're gone." The cook gave him an amused smile

"No, but I recall hearing Nami say this patch is marked on the map." He said reassuringly.

"What if she's wrong, man?"

"You think Nami is wrong?" The blonde raised his brows. "Zoro was messing with you, you know? Take a breath." The tension left slightly the boy's shoulders. Sanji let out a deep sight. "Can't really blame you, can I?" Usopp looked up at him with confusion. "I wish I could feel anything myself. Damn bored is all I feel."

Usopp pulled from the collar of his own shirt.

"It feels like its closing on us-"

"Pull yourself together." A voice said from above.

Both men turned around and looked up to see the crew's navigator illuminated by the fire, standing at the top of the stairs of the upper deck. Her ginger hair, a fiery red, resembling the embers crackling from the torches was a sight next to her irritated baby blues and matching scowl.

"We're on our way to the Grand Line. What did you expect? Smooth waves and sunny days." Nami continued. "This weather is next to nothing to the things that await us there."
