A couple months later, I finally moved in with Carson. I had sold most of my mom's things except the items I wanted to keep, including her car. I also managed to sell the house and Carson and I used some of that money to buy some simple furniture for the apartment and set the rest aside to buy our own house later down the road.
I got a job at the sandwich shop, since I knew Carson and the manager saw how often I came around, he hired me by the end of my interview. Working helped me keep my mind off the realization that my mom is gone and I had been living in a house with one of those monsters for almost a month before it gave itself away. The new change happening in my life was refreshing, perfect for the spring weather that was just around the corner.
During lunch one afternoon, Carson got a call.
"Hello?" I continued to eat while I watched as his eyebrows rose while he listened to the person on the other end. "What? Does anyone know where he might be?" he quickly brushed his hair back as he ran his fingers through it. "I'll see what I can do." With that, he hung up.
"Who was that?" I asked.
"It was Skyler. Merek is missing..."
