THE AIR HUNG HEAVY with surprise as Takeda dropped the bombshell. "Walter, you're the MVP player!!"
Kageyama and Tsukishima, having witnessed Walter's prowess firsthand, simply nodded, but the rest of the team – Daichi, Sugawara, and Tanaka – were stunned into silence.
It wasn't just that Walter had blocked their spike flawlessly, it was his overall skill and talent that had them reevaluating everything.
Daichi and Sugawara exchanged a sheepish glance. They’d assumed Walter was just a regular student who wanted to join the club. They hadn't imagined he was a star player, let alone an MVP champion!
“Wow, we only caught one game last year. Sugawara-san, Daichi-san, and I would’ve known you a long time ago,” Tanaka mumbled, a touch of embarrassment in his voice.
Takeda, sensing the shift in the room, raised an eyebrow. “Eh? Daichi-san, don’t you know Walter-san’s situation?”
Daichi and Sugawara froze. They’d been so caught up in the moment, they hadn’t even considered that they were in the dark about Walter’s background. A quick look at Walter revealed a subtle smile, a hint of amusement in his eyes.
“Actually,” Daichi stammered, "we... well...”
Walter chuckled, his voice warm and reassuring. "Haha! I'm not super famous, so it makes sense you wouldn't have known me. But hey, that's all in the past now." He gave a wink, adding, "All those accomplishments are just water under the bridge.”
He then turned to the team, his tone shifting to one of excitement. “Now that we're all officially teammates, let's work together and bring out our best performances!”
The team’s collective energy shifted. Takeda, beaming, observed the camaraderie blossoming between the players. It felt like a new chapter was being written for Karasuno.
"Awesome, everyone! I feel more confident about our upcoming practice match with Aoba Johsai!"
The team’s attention snapped to Takeda, their anticipation growing.
"However," he continued, glancing down at the briefing in his hand, "When I was briefed on the match, Aoba Johsai did have one small request."
A wave of curiosity washed over the players. What could Aoba Johsai possibly want?
“Oh? What are the requirements?” Tanaka blurted out, his curiosity piqued.
Takeda paused for dramatic effect. “Their condition is… to let Kageyama-san play the whole game as a setter.”
The news hit the team like a shockwave. Tanaka’s jaw dropped. “Are they looking down on us?”
"Or do they think only Kageyama is worthy of attention?" added a thoughtful Yamaguchi.
Sugawara, always the voice of reason, interjected,
"Isn’t that exciting? Opportunities like these don't come along very often. People may assume that everyone would immediately recognize Walter's strength, but to turn that individual strength into a team-wide advantage takes hard work and practice. Isn't this competition the perfect chance for these newcomers to put in the extra effort and truly integrate themselves into the Karasuno team?”
Sugawara’s proposition to relinquish his role as the main second setter in favor of a collective effort stunned the team. This was an unexpected move.
He was essentially sacrificing his chance to play in the match for the betterment of the team.
Takeda’s admiration for Sugawara was clear. “The schedule is finalized for the upcoming game on Tuesday, and we'll need to make the most of the time we have after school. So, everyone, make sure to be on time!”
