Hard mode dies too. You walked through the judgement hall, killed Asgore and Flowey in the throne room, and then entered the barrier. However, there are three people in there.
Sans: heya, you were busy, huh?
Sans: so. . . i've got a question for you.
Sans: do you think the worst person can even change. . .
Sans: that can be a good person. . . if they just try?
You walk one step forward.
Sans: heh heh heh. . .
Sans: well. . . i'm warning you, kid.
Sans: you had a real bad time there.

As Sans' eye turns blue and yellow, two red souls and six other different colored souls appear next to Sans.

You know the five stages of Grief? Distrust describes Denial since he doesn't believe that the human's bad, Hard mode describes Anger because well. . . you know how the fandom describes what Hard mode Sans' expressions would look like (my take would have been that Sans' expressions stays the same, only the attacks got harder.), Killer describes Bargaining due to the deal he agreed with his Chara, Neutral Run describes Depression (the reason why is the same as Hard mode.), and Classic describes Acceptance since he already accepted the resets and how life would go.
I get it. Classic would also die in Phase 5. But in Phase 5, not only Frisk and Chara are helping Classic, the 6 souls as well. Also, Frisk used the save point before Classic started the battle. So if you successfully defeated Classic, Frisk would load the file back to Sans starting the battle. Due to Frisk having the file, if you die, you die. You were making others suffer and now it's your turn on the chopping block.
