Dan could tell she isn't in the diner. Her mind is elsewhere as she has been cleaning the same spot for nearly half an hour now.
He wanted to point it out but decided it wasn't his business. He didn't understand the younger generation anyway, so it would only cause him migraines if he did.
Instead, he sits back on his usual stool behind the counter and grabs the newspaper, preparing himself for a political war within the very same pages.
The silence in the diner suddenly vanishes as the doorbell chimes, getting Dan to glance over his newspaper and at the man walking in.
The perfume is the first thing that he catches before the man emerges, taking him by surprise when he notices who he'd not have expected.
Kaia drops her shoulders as she catches the familiar scent. Only stronger.
She hadn't forgotten it and she knew it was his favorite.
"Oh, Stain, when did you get back?" Dan asks and sets the newspaper down as Stain's eyes instantly fall on Kaia with her back faced to him. "It's been what, two... Three years?"
"What? Did you miss me old man?" Stain grins as he turns his gaze towards Dan, deciding to walk towards him instead.
He takes a seat on one of the stools in front of the counter, leaning onto it and exposing his glorious tattoos as he leaves his T-shirt sleeves way up his elbow.
The front buttons of his shirt are almost opened all the way down to his belt, exposing his tight defined stomach that stretches down to his belt holding the black ripped jeans.
Stain had always had a fashion sense that exposed as much of his hard earned body definitions as possible. It was his way of flexing himself to everyone without telling it to them.
He was full of self pride and he didn't care if it annoyed anyone around him. It still brought the women to him, so he cared less if people spoke behind his back.
"You look a day over 200. Not been taking your vitamins, huh?" He grins out as Dan rolls his eyes and chuckles out, crossing his arms to his chest.
"I'm 65, besides, you'll look just like me when you get to my age, you think those good looks of yours will last?" Dan smirks at him, getting Stain to chuckle out with a small shrug of his shoulders.
"I'll still be handsome. It's a curse I can't seem to get rid of. It's a burden really. I couldn't even stay single. It was impossible." He says, deliberately so that Kaia could catch on to their conversation.
Not that she'd want to be listening in on them, but he was making it so obvious he wanted her to be paying attention.
"When I moved out, there were many women asking me left and right, but my eyes zeroed down on one woman, Linda." He explains as Dan's eyes slowly move towards Kaia, noticing she's now turned her attention to the windows. "She's a model, and very gorgeous. She was playing hard to get, but she eventually gave in and we had crazy sex on the first day we met."
Dan chokes out on air and Kaia clenches her jaw as she gazes out at a dog outside the diner walking by.
"F-First day?" He asks in surprise and Stain nods his head in agreement as he crosses his arms to his chest. "Wasn't that so fast?"
"Depends on who." He shrugs his shoulders. "We didn't think it would be serious. We just kept spending hot nights together on weekends, then we started dating three months later. Till now."
"Oh wow." Dan clears his throat as he places his hands on the counter, glancing back at Kaia who has still been on the same window since. "So you love her that much to be with her for two years now, huh?"
Stain stares at Dan for a moment with a small smile that slowly curves down into a frown as what he wanted to say suddenly vanishes.
He glances down to his laps as he bites down to his lower lip, staring at his white sneakers instead.
"There's no such thing." Stain chuckles suddenly as he glances at Dan. "No one loves anyone. It's just an act. Sure we like each other, but loving someone isn't real. It's a thought."
"Why would you assume that?" Dan asks with a raising brow as he stares down at the young and handsome man in front of him. "Why would it be thought. That's like saying air doesn't exist."
"I don't know." Stain shrugs his shoulders. "Maybe Kaia could elaborate on that. She should know that better than I should."
Kaia glances over her shoulder and meets his gaze in an instant. As though he knew she'd glance at him.
She frowns, visibly showing how irritated she is with him as he is deliberately calling her out for breaking up with him.
Even though it was his own doing that led them to this.
"Won't you tell Dan?" He asks as he raises a brow at her before slowly getting up from the stool and making his way towards her. "Won't you elaborate how love doesn't really exist? Just a thought, a feeling that's not even there. Faked and acted?"
Kaia drops her gaze to the floor as she stops wiping the windows at this point when he is close enough to breath in the air she is breathing out.
He suddenly places his arm against the wall beside her, leaning against it as he gazes down at her, watching how she tries to avoid his eyes.
"He's eager to know." Stain continues to put the pressure on her and she finally glares up at him, pointing into his chest.
"You think you're clever." She clenches her jaw as she presses her finger even harder against his chest, barely getting him to react. "Love is real, but it's not easy and it's definitely not for everyone."
Stain frowns at this as she takes her hand from his chest and grabs her wiper, turning to leave when he grabs her shoulder and pins her between him and the wall, making sure she has no space to escape as seats and tables stand on each side of her.
"Not for everyone, huh?" He chuckles as he clicks his upper teeth, exposing the pure white glaze of his perfectly lined teeth, clearly he had gone to fix them at the dentist. "Like who? Do tell, I'm eager to know."
"I'm busy, Stain." She says as she grabs his shoulders and tries to push him away.
"Just tell me." He shrugs his shoulders with a mischievous smirk on his face. "Is it me?"
"It's me, I'm not cut out for it." She rolls her eyes as he frowns down at her before leaning back slightly, still keeping her in place.
"Then what's with the new fancy boyfriend?" He asks as he clenches his fists against the glass, trying not to show it on his face. "You looked like you actually liked him from your eyes yesterday. He's a scumbag and you know it."
"Thanks for telling me." Kaia nods her head as the diner bell chimes once more with a family of four stepping in, getting Stain to reluctantly lean away from Kaia, freeing her. "But you shouldn't be in other people's relationships. You have yours to think about." She says as she passes by him, getting him to tsk as he forces himself down on one of the seats around him.
