Sitting across from Sonic, Shadow took a sip of whiskey, feeling the smooth burn down his throat.

"Still can't believe you and Blaze shacked up together," Sonic chuckled, an impish grin on his face. "Who'd have thought the brooding Ultimate Lifeform would enjoy playing house?"

Shadow rolled his eyes, but couldn't prevent the corner of his mouth quirking up slightly. "We simply share living quarters. But I'll admit...having her there has been surprisingly pleasant."

Sonic's eyebrows shot up at Shadow's almost-smile. He really must be enjoying this cohabitation thing!

"Wow, don't look now, but I think you're actually happy, Shads!" Sonic teased.

Shadow huffed, but the subtle smile remained. "I wouldn't go that far. But Blaze is...good company to have around. She understands the need for space, while also providing companionship."

Sonic watched him with an incredulous chuckle. He had to admit, this unexpectedly domestic side of Shadow was great to see. The guy deserved a little happiness, even if he'd never outright admit how much he enjoyed having Blaze in his life.

"So when are you gonna pop the question to Blaze anyway?" Sonic asked, waggling his eyebrows.

Shadow nearly choked on his whiskey. "That's...not something we're currently considering," he said after recovering.

"Ah come on, you obviously love having her around," Sonic prodded with a grin. "Might as well make it official!"

Shadow shook his head. "We are content with our arrangement as it stands. But..." He frowned thoughtfully. "I suppose it's not entirely outside the realm of possibility."

Sonic's eyes lit up. "You're totally thinking about it now, aren't ya?"

Shadow felt his face grow warm and took a hasty gulp of whiskey. "That's neither here nor there," he grumbled.

"Heh, no need to be embarrassed, Shads," Sonic said. "I'm happy for you two, really. Must be nice not having to sneak around anymore either, eh?"

He elbowed Shadow playfully while the black hedgehog looked distinctly flustered. After finishing his drink, Shadow stood abruptly.

"I think it's time I headed home," he announced, face still flushed. Sonic snickered knowingly. The Ultimate Lifeform had it bad alright, even if he'd never openly admit it.

As Shadow stood up to leave, Sonic let out an exaggerated sigh. "What, the little lady got you on a curfew or something?" he teased.

Shadow glared at the snickering hedgehog. "Blaze does not dictate my schedule. I simply see no need to stay out late and drink irresponsibly."

Sonic waved a hand dismissively. "Uh huh, sure. Or maybe you just can't hang with me drink for drink anymore! Getting soft in your old age, Shads?"

He grinned challengingly. Shadow's eyes narrowed - he knew Sonic was baiting him, but damn it if his competitive side wasn't rising to the challenge.

Slowly, Shadow sank back into the booth seat. "One more drink then. But only to prove I can still outlast you anytime, anywhere."

Sonic's grin grew impossibly wide. "That's the spirit! Bartender, another round!" He laughed as fresh whiskeys were slid their way. "Bottoms up, Grandpa Shadow!"

Shadow grit his teeth and knocked back his drink. He'd show that cocky hedgehog a thing or two! Though in the back of his mind, he made a note to pick up some flowers for Blaze on the way home...

As the drinks flowed, Shadow felt his inhibitions lowering, though he struggled to remain stoic. Sonic, meanwhile, seemed unaffected.

"Hey Shadow, why did the chicken cross the road?" Sonic asked with a goofy grin. When Shadow didn't respond, he answered, "To get to the ugly guy's house!"
